Summer SciFi Thread

From the looks of the trailer it looks like it could swing both ways. I get a sense that they are inspired by the Batman reboot from looking at the it.

Looks like it could be interesting, although it appears Detroit was subbed out for the slums of Nairobi.

I'm not saying I'm going to watch it, I just don't like pronouncing judgment on a film before it has even been released.

Eminently reasonable. My SOP with sci-fi movies is: Don't pronounce judgement on it, and don't go see it.

I've found you can get plenty of millage complaining about what the people who've seen the movie tell you.

/Cynical mode (still) on/

The autonomy theme for Robocop *is* a nice idea. Has Hollywood come up with a new and fresh way to show us that Love Conquers All?

/Cynical mode (remains) on/

You and Joecoolyo must see it or I'll have no gauge whether to spend time on it or not.

movie trailer

Looks potentially interesting :) Not sure what exactly it is supposed to be (some sort of "consciousness" of this scientist moved into a machine/computer?). The idea (in my view) has too many vague points (and the premise may be wrong too, i think) but the movie can be interesting so i will have it in mind, thanks :)

To paraphrase Vernor Vinge, when the Singularity happens, it will be an interesting afternoon. The only 'defense' against a super-human AI is a benign super-human AI.

So is it known if this will be about a consciousness of a human mixed/transported into a computer, which then takes control of other computers it is linked to? (cause this, as a basic premise, has been presented to some degree in that old- cult classic- film, The Lawnmower man).

I don't recall much from the above, but it had a similar idea, although it was also very prominently a fussion of the cybernet setting with the excellent old story "flowers for Algeron". :)

The robocop-reboot will be out in a couple of weeks, and it looks incredibly awful...

Do note the nice human hand there, along with the "robotic suit" which is pure trash.

It is sad that they took a classic 1987 movie, and turned it into a FPS for 5-year olds.

Yeah..."Beyond the Trailer" pointed out that the new robo suit made him look like an appliance.

There is only ONE Robocop. No sequels, no TV series...

Indeed...

This robocop-reboot is nowhere near being an improvement on the 80s Robocop, which was a very dark and cynical movie.

The new robocop sounds like it will be actually a pro-government message, in clear antithesis to the old Robocop's entirely anti-authoritarian narrative.

Spoiler :
A clip from the 80s Robocop:

(some loop added in that video, but you get what it originally was ).

Kyriakos, to be fair, when the original Robocop came out, the idea of a machine that could be.balanced and run faster than a human was not yet feasible.

Today it is.

But this is a remake that did not have to be made. SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN MADE

Check out this excellent Peter Weller interview/ rant on Robocop:

I'd almost be willing to bet...

Spoiler :
There's no Directive 4 in the remake

Au contraire... watch the trailers...

Still... I don't like it one bit...
