Weren't the Anglicans sorta-Catholics, sorta-Protestants? Or have I misjudged the religious situation in this part of Europe?
Most Anglicans consider themselves Protestant, but yes, some do consider themselves (Anglo-)Catholic. Anglicanism is considered a High Church form of Protestantism, which means they believe in the validity and importance of Apostolic succession (i.e. Bishop of ..) just like Orthodox and Catholics do. In the Netherlands, there is a self-declared Catholic church known as the Old Catholics which is however in full communion with Anglicans and is theologically the closest thing we have to the COE here. They are called 'Old' because the Dutch republic rightfully put the Papists in their place, and thus so it was the Old Catholic Church became the oldest self-declared Catholic church that is still functional in the Netherlands, whereas the Papists did not reestablish themselves until somewhere in the 19th century.
I guess it's much easier down here; you're either Orthodox, or you're a Muslim.
In great Bulgaria, you're either HeLLo, or aLLaH!
