The Democratic Caliphate.

I think we should create a new temporary group, at least until Sanguiv will return.

I'll PM a mod and ask.

What's the URL of the group?

I have already sent the screenshots to Jackelgull, so you may start to expect the story update.

If Caterpillar can't discover a way to use the old group, then I also vote for the creation of a new temporary group

Well it is official, there is no way to change admins. So you will need to create a new group. I suggest calling it something along the lines of "provisional government" or so.

Actually I said I would wait for the counselors to vote on this, but I think I may start creating the group. If we decide not to use it, then I copy the text to another place.

My spare time is not much now, but may be enough to create the group.

I'm not done with writing the update ( it is more difficult than people realize to make trade sound, well not exactly exciting but at least not boring as a rock) but here is an appetizer, an intro to whet the appetite, and to see what kind of writer you have hired on. Just know this, I am not Sanguivorant, and I won't try to write like him. Here's the intro:

In the year 1189, the Arab world was taken by storm when the current Khalifat al-Mu’mineen fell ill and could not rule. The empire held its breath in fear. Who would lead? Would the enemies of Islam march to exploit this loss of leadership? After several months of fierce debate, the council of 1189 came to a conclusion. Dar-al-Misr came to be the head of the Muslim Ummah in the absence of the Caliphate.

This controversial choice sparked fear amongst the people. The most populous house would also become caliph? Would he not abuse his position to benefit his house? Could he truly uphold his oath to defend the Ummah? But the Arabs decided to accept him. While his position might lend itself to abuse, the current Dar-al-Misr was known to be an honest and upright man. His oath was considered a good a guarantee to lenders as gold. Still, the ummah would watch and wait with bated breath, to see if this was simply a temporary stopgap measure, or a dangerous precedent, and if the Dar-al-Misr proved to be of immoral character; well, the greatest jihad is to oppose the unjust tyrant.

I would like to emphasize that my position is still inferior to what a Caliph is. I don't have any intention to usurp his role. My mission is within Misr (Egypt) for the prosperity of the Caliphate.

And I couldn't do anything of this if it wasn't for our illustrious Master of Intelligence, Nidham al-Adl who bring you the news here.

I know, I know, don't worry about it.

Anyways, for any who are curious, I am setting myself a tentative deadline of around Saturday for the update to come out. Today I somehow miraculously finished my homework before 8:30, but AP classes are monsters, especially Physics.

I believe it would be better to call him a regent rather than the Head of the Ummah, temporary or not.

I like regent. And we can say the Caliph is on some sort of venture into far away lands.

Maybe he had a kid I don't know. Maybe he's living in a small village at like 140 or however old he is.

Quick, someone call Atlantic! That would do great for an Atlantic style side story.

Edit - Also Spirictum, you could state a similar legend to the last Roman Emperor about the Caliph. The last Roman Emperor disappeared but legend states that he turned to stone and is hidden inside a cave on Mount Athos where he will awaken on the eve of the Empire's destruction once again and save it and lead it to a new era of Roman expansion.

You think I can't do it?? Humph! :gripe: :joke:

That's a nice idea DKVM, but I prefer not to take part in writings, not only because I feel many here can do a better job then mine, but also because I have the burden of the gameplay, so I want to let the storytelling free from my direct intervention (I'll let myself act in character, and nothing more).

But I agree someone could create a story about it.

To update things here, I've already created the group but I want to make the Ummah Report thread before I let people enter. I think I can do it now, but I need to finish the task adhiraj required to me first, so this may take some time. As we are still waiting for Jackelgull's update, I'm not in a hurry to make the Report.

I would like those Counselors who wish to change their roles to post about it and say what exactly they want to become. In order, I remember Adhiraj saying he wishes to become the Counselor of Persia, then Al-Noob stating he could want a province in Ethiopia and then baseball pie joining but waiting without a specific role until a new province was available for him. If anyone has changed their minds you may say so.

Also we may need someone to take VGL's position while he is missing (like Nighthawk substituted mrrandomplayer's post a while ago). VGL didn't show up here since he "declared this story dead and destroyed". I PMed him about our votings and he didn't answer it as well. We will need someone to do his policies for him if he doesn't come back in time.

And to conclude my thought about this I would like to propose the creation of a new Position: The Religious Advisor. I know the Caliph is our Spiritual Leader, but we have no active Caliph now, and as Regent I feel I'm not suitable as a Spiritual Leader. I think we need him to coordinate our missionary efforts, to closely work with the Minister of Foreign Affairs (regarding Brothers in Faith and Infidels). This position could be combined with another small role (Stability Advisor) or similar role (Minister of Foreign Affairs), or go with a new counselor.

IMO, new members bring diversity so I like the idea of having a new counselor to this position, but I also think it could perfectly combine with the Stability advisor or the Minister of Foreign Affairs, so I actually have no preference on the outcome, and I would like to see what those who want to change positions, have no position yet or are the holders of one of the mentioned roles before, have to say about it.

TBH what made me think we needed something like that was the advantage we have on the presence of a big Holy Islamic Roman Empire covering a huge part of Europe (from Greece to Norway, contiguously), that can be dissipated because of instability. If we manage to put Islam in several cities they have that don't share our faith we could give them the stability they need to endure the european wars, and thus save us a big partnership and no conflicts on the Balkans. Only a religious advisor would advocate for that (like jackelgull does with spies).

One possible name for the Religious Adviser could be the "Court Imam."
