My roommate calls me yesterday and says that a hazmat team just made its way through the neighbourhood. The police sectioned off a house closeby, in a very nice and decently upscale neighbourhood, (nicer than mine) and apparently found canisters with chemicals in them.

Everybody's screaming meth lab, but the next day in the paper it says that they were just harmless chemicals. Phew! No meth labs in my part of town! Awesome!

Nooooooooooooo why do the thread gods forsake me.

In another stream of good news: POLAND... can into space!

From the article:

Great Meadow Correctional Facility has become home to four unlikely inmates.
Some might call them cute and cuddly.
A litter of tan kittens found its way into the bowels of the prison a few months ago and since then, into the hearts of some of the staff and inmates.
Employees have chipped in for food and the Granville Veterinary Clinic has offered medical services at low cost.
The state has helped provide food and flea and tick medicine when the kitten funds fall short, according to Jeffrey Lindstrand, deputy superintendent of administration.

Got into UVA today.

Which one? I know you're from Arlington, so I hope you're attending that one, but you never know.

For the record, I'm an alumnus of the Dutch UVA which I loathe with passion.

Make sure you say hi to madviking.
Will do if I end up attending.

Not sure why a student from Virginia who speaks no Dutch and has never been to the Netherlands would go to University van Amsterdam (?). Yes, it's University of Virginia.

Most Dutch universities do offer English language Master's programs. In fact, it is increasingly rare to find a Dutch language graduate program. At the VU University the Bachelor's program of CS - which I currently read - is in English. Good news for anyone here who wishes to study in the Netherlands!

Right, I'd imagine that'd be the case. And wiki says 86% of Dutch people can speak English. But still, it's a Dutch country and I don't know any Dutch. If I were to go to a foreign university it'd probably be Edinburgh (I've actually been to the city), but it'd probably be somewhat difficult to get in and I've only taken one IB exam.
