Facemask is the only way I've heard of, and that's not tremendously successful. But I don't think gastroenteritis is generally airborne, unless someone vomits over you.
Washing your hands after going into a sickroom is not a bad idea, too. I have heard.
Or you could be fatalistic about it like I am.
Get vaccinated for the major stuff and don't lick people randomly unless you are pretty sure they aren't sick. Don't eat any food you think might be off and don't get sleep deprived or wasted for several days in a row.
Once you have that covered unless you are wearing masks everywhere, not breathing within 6 - 12 feet of anybody else, and are wearing gloves anytime you touch anything anybody else in public may have touched after sneezing or wiping their eyes or nose or with their unwashed bathroom hands(so basically don't touch anything) you are probably going to come down with whatever is going around unless you have already had it or something similar enough that your body already has resistance already built up.

We get on well, make each other laugh, make interesting small talk, but I'm still not certain. I'm really no good at picking up signals. I can even talk to her in her native language (which she is quite impressed by) but still... not sure what do. What complicates matters is that there's someone else, who I'm not sure is interested in her like I am, constantly hanging around her. Like a fly around pig shi-uger. The kind of person who you just want to drop dead, you know? There's always a complication.
