The Mars Chronicles

The Americas sure are quiet.

behind your computer I suppose ;)

Sorry, I could only fit a few characters in this update. If yours did not make it, sorry, I promise to get it in eventually.

The Watcher entered the Solar System, drifting through the expanse of icy comets that was the Oort Cloud and Kuiper Belt, past the orbits of the great gas planets, and into the asteroid belt.

Drifting close to an asteroid, the Watcher sensed that there was life on this potato-shaped metal boulder. Very little life, but there indeed was life. Intrigued, the Watcher came even closer. What it saw was both disappointing and intriguing. A small gathering of lights, in a series of concentric circles. This life was obviously not native. A colony, perhaps?

The Watcher drifted away. It saw a red world. There was life on this world, too. Much more life, and far more dense too.

Coming closer, the Watcher saw a great string rising up from the surface of this world, all the way above the thin layer of gases that shielded it. There was life at the top, a flurry of life. At the bottom of the tower, there was a large settlement where much life had gathered, a city even.

The Watcher continued its journey towards the yellow sun at this system’s center. Suddenly, the Watcher stopped and thought to itself, What was it doing here, in this insignificant little system at the outer edge of the galaxy? It was a being of pure energy, all-powerful, immortal. It could do virtually anything it wanted to. Why was it here? It shrugged the intriguing thought off and continued.

Ahead lay a blue and white world orbited by a smaller, dusty gray world. The Watcher came closer, sensing great life there, almost overwhelmed by the life force radiating from the world. There was something special about this world. It was almost like…a blue marble.

Blue marble. Where had it gotten that from?

The Watcher shrugged it off. He exited the light to view the dark side of this world. And then it saw it. Brilliant strings and patches of light, stretching across the globe, beacons signaling out into space. It was beautiful.

And then the Watcher saw visions.

A cloud of dust. The dust collects, forming worlds. One world, born in fire, a world being forged in the fires of hell. Rocks from space batter the surface. The fires turn to torrential storms. Seas rise. Small life forms are born deep under the sea. They grow, first into plants, then small animals. The skies fade from a noxious green to a lush blue. Land forms. The world is coated with ice, the world thaws away. Animals continue to grow, to evolve. A creature from the seas clambers onto a sandy beach. Great beasts begin to rise. Jungles, mountains, deserts form. The world cleansed. The survivors rise again, dominating all. Horns, teeth, claws. Roaring. Giant beasts dominate. A comet streaks through the sky, slams into the ground. The world cleansed again. Small furry creatures grow into bigger furry creatures. These creatures take to the trees. They grow, they evolve there. These creatures come down. One discovers he can walk upright, on only two legs. Clans of these creatures cross the savanna. One rubs two rocks together. Orange flames spark and burn. Another smashes a bone down on the ground, then stabs the one next to it. Him. Glaciers and ice roll, then recede. These humans begin to build shelters. They begin to farm, building villages, then towns, then grand cities. A blade of metal is forged. Great empires rise. Stone pyramids and temples rise from the sands. Chariots roll, metal against metal. Buildings, forests of white columns. Canals. Arenas. Empires. A bloodied figure nailed to cross. Empires fall. Great cities burn, great cities empty. Darkness falls. A man flees one city under a crescent moon, headed for another city. Dragon headed ships, horned helmets, burning. Shiny metal armor, painted crosses, castles. Furry horsemen, burning. Disease, death, black boils. Great domed buildings, books, money. Three ships cross a great sea. Pyramids burn as a helmeted figure looks on. Small villages on the edge grow into towns. Paper nailed to a door. Sword meets sword, explosions and smoke. Water turns brown. Blue drives red out. Heads fly. A short blue rider meets a chill wind. Iron horses, steam and coal. Springtime. Blue and gray clash. Two fly. One dies, and lines are dug through the mud. Blood spills. Red and white clash. Red truly turns red. One and his struggle. Angels of Death flying high. Motherland and Fatherland meet on the battlefield. A mushroom rises over an island. Fear of red. Shots, jungles. One small step. Red dies. A stream of data flows. Eagles and swordsmen clash. Happiness turns to sadness. Starting over. New worlds. Hope.

And the Watcher saw something else.

A field. Rockets. A black haired women running up, yelling. Fire. Explosions. Blackness. Death.

And in that moment, the Watcher knew that death was not the end. The Watcher was no longer an it. He was more. He was human.

A challenge: See if you can name what everything listed in that big italicized paragraph. Fitting 4 billion years into one small enough sized paragraph is not easy. ;)

This was originally going to be part of Chapter 4, but it was far too big, and Chapter 4 is going to be big enough anyway, so I just decided to spin it off.

The Watcher will return. ;)

I died :(

I'll try for it later.

To add some incentive, I will be awarding the SK Ultimate Fried Chicken Bucket as a reward, as I see that nobody is brave enough to try :p

As far as I know, Napoleon's 'defeat' because of the Russian winter was just a retreat in which 90% of his troops died... And later, the third reich does the EXACT SAME THING with better weapons :wallbash:
