Looks like he was trying to recreate the maritime republics. Genoa and Venice were the greatest of the four after all.
I always settle Genoa. Not only is it a better location, but you can take pretty much all Marseille's tiles when you pop a GA in there. And if the French piss you off, just kill Marseille and get the iron too. Simples

Tibetan North Africa, lol. Please note that Notre Dame is in Carthage as well. And yes, I was playing the Mayan. I got lucky and Arabia for invaders event, after wiping their stack, they collapsed.
P.S. I'm continuing this game for fun. The AP hasn't built but I'm basically through and through Protestant except for one city that has Catholicism. Should I switch to build the AP?

No insult intended, but the first thing I thought when seeing BenZLs comment was 'Why is he calling that man a woman?'
However, when looking longer at the picture, it's indeed clear that she's a woman. Just not that clear.

As an artist, I can give a pointer here:
-Softening the jaw a bit will help make her read properly as a female.
Currently, the jaw is too square and angular, a trait more commonly associated with men.
Also, trimming the eyebrows a bit too would help.

Right, true, I was thinking of other religious wonders. Could you spread protestantism to that city and then build it? No point switching without it being the Holy city of your religion, unless the shrine has not been built.

Do you mean Catholicism? I'm already 100% protestant with one city being catholic (It was Caracas, which I took from Spain.). You can already see the Protestant holy city in that screenshot I posted, it's Madrid. I'm also pretty sure that the church of Holy Sepulchre wasn't built so that seems worth it to me.
