What kind of German are you? Don't drink....unbelievable. Next I'll have Irish and Russians telling me they've become teetotalers. What the hell is the world coming to?

Anyone have a link to one of the many posts where Dachs and others demolish the idea of nation's with high trade and commerce ties don't go to war with one another?

I think 1914 rather does that in a word.

Then you always get people responding "well they weren't democracies, they didn't have that much trade". Which, of course, is wrong. But doesn't have enough substance to the argument to push it through.

Wouldn't the ACW do that for two democratically elected governments with terrifically intertwined economies that still didn't stave off mass slaughter?

An example, certainly. But I don't think a good one, because the secession itself was not a settled issue, and then they went to war afterwards. But rather was the reason for the war in the first place.

That, and it's disputable how much the Confederate government was actually an democratically elected government.

It's not the best sure, but break it out differently and the same principles apply. State governments were far more autonomous than we think of them today. Those were units of democratic government that had close ties. Those units of democratic government(unless you want to make the argument that none of the slave states could be classified as a democratic government but then I don't think could classify northern states or the federal government of being such either) had a spat and declared war on each other. But yar, I'm sure Dachs can do it better.

Yeah, I'm unusual.
I'm also fully aware of the fact that not drinking limits the fun activities quite a bit :/.

Naw. Pick up a cheap hobby with them that lets you talk. Hiking, flying kites, model rocketry, Warhammer, Magic the Gathering(well maybe those last two aren't that cheap), euchre - there's a lot of possibilities, I just don't know what you and your friends are into.

And it's quite possible to still go down the pub, not drink alcohol, and have lots of fun. Provided you go with the flow. Really drunk people appear hilarious when you're sober. Generally speaking they're actually much the same, but very much slower.

 that's actually a good question.
But somehow the only common thing is that we're all (unvoluntarily) living together, and that (at least parts) get along quite okay.

I have no real idea for a hobby. Unless I begin to do some sports, which would somehow be a good idea, but yeah...not really.
Boardgame evening might be something, but then I'd have to convince them to some more complicated things like settlers of Catan or Dominion .

Yeah, guess that's a rather futile thing.
Especially since most of them will only stay here for 2 years (we're talking about mostly foreign master students), so I'm not sure if it's even worth putting some excessive amount of effort into it.

I sadly cannot say that I agree with your observation.
Being together with drunk people is at best not stressing, if nothing's going wrong.

Clearly they're not very German either. Catan should be in their blood. :D

Oh, means I'd have to start playing it again...not a high chance atm :dunno:.

Well, besides the fact that I'm currently not in Germany ^^:

The French girl didn't even know what I meant when I mentioned the game at some point, so yeah, you're right :D.

Well, building up a relationship that involves mating sometimes keeps people interacting despite inconvenience. They might even want jewelry and to share the rent! Wait, that has a lot of long term repercussions actually...

All those female people have female friends. Apart from a small, but significant, minority, that don't.

What kind of criminal charge would forcing someone to commit suicide be?

I'd recommend against it firstly.

Secondly, it depends on the state, the facts, intent, causation.
