The thing is that if they'd extend it to June, it would match up with school year much better than if they let it expire in the middle of April or whatever. So maybe they will, I'll just have to ask them. It's frustrating because I'm tempted to take out a lease on another apartment early and pay double rent because it's very hard to find the 'perfect' place but I don't know what we'd do for the final few months between when the lease expires and my graduation.

Or what we'd do if I graduate and don't have a job lined up. Argh

A month or two of overlap on leases while simultaneously getting kicked in the pants by first & last month's rent + security deposit is just one of the really fun bits of changing around leases. Obviously avoid it if you can, but sometimes it just doesn't work out well. :(

Yeah, I'm going to try and avoid it if possible. But it's more the 'you don't have a place to live for the next 2 months because this lease is up and no one's going to rent to you for 2 months' that gets me worried. The extended-stay motels are always a crap deal and we'd be burning serious cash staying in a small motel and storing all our stuff. I don't even know if you can rent a storage place for just a month or two.

Thanks everyone about the recursive definition thingy

Guyz, gotta question for ya.

Is it rasist to want the first black pope to called by the papal name of Pope Lando II? 'Cuz that would be totes awesome.

Uh, what happened to Lando I?

Pope Lando I died in 914.
wikipedia said:
Pope Lando (also known as Landus[1]) was elected pope in either July or August 913. He died about six months later, in either February or March 914.

He was born in Sabina, Italy. His father was reportedly named Taino. He did not change his name on his accession.

Lando is thought to have had powerful friends who helped him to be elected pope. Little more is known about him. He was the last pope to use a papal name which had not been previously used until Pope John Paul I did so in 1978.

Lando was pope during the period later known as the Saeculum obscurum, which lasted from 904 to 964.

Let me put on my star wars wookie beanie/thinking cap to answer this.

No, it's not racist at all.

The first black Pope should be named Pope Malcom X

Surely there's more unpopular names than those?

Popesie Hopesie? Pope Satan's Love Child? Pope Dish Cloth?

Pope Fried Bread and Onions? Pope My Arse?

(Please don't think I'm being disrespectful. It's only humour, you know. Where's all this thunder and lightning suddenly come from?)

Honestly, I didn't know there was a Pope Lando until one of the popes in my Crusader Kings game last night was named Pope Lando II, and I thought that was so ridiculous that I had to check the prior list of papal names to see if there was actually a Pope Lando. The More You Know!

They are going to have to chew through a few Malcolms and Judases before that happens, then. There aren't too many Scottish popes. :(

An extremely random question:

Do you guys keep your shoes on when you visit other peoples houses? And what about your own houses? This is about wether you do so in your country or region.

I heard people in Germany keep on their shoes when they visit others, and that seems absurd to me.

Depends. Largely on the time of year. If it's dry out it doesn't matter at all really. If it's winter and there's snow to track in or spring when you get muddy, yea they come off. Also depends on the house. Nice newish carpet? They always come off.

I ask if they have any rules about shoes on carpets, and that usually clears it up. Most of my friends and relatives allow shoes on the hardwood floors downstairs, but not in carpeted areas (usually 1-2 rooms downstairs and the upstairs areas, or in apartments not outside the kitchen/dining area).

I found is amusing that there have been five Popes named Sixtus. It is possible (but very unlikely) for the next pope to be Sixtus VI, or 66. Many Biblical numerologists claim that means "evil man," and it is getting really close to the number of the Beast.

It is also amusing that the 2nd pope by the name of Martinus was Martinus IV, not because of Anti-Popes (which explain all the other numbering discrepancies) taking the names Martinus II and Martinus III but because of someone misread the names Marinus I and Marinus II.

Feels like there really needs to be a Sixtus VI to round out the group. It's kind of like the Star Wars trilogies--you expect them to be in 3s.

Yea, like Antilogic said, I ask.

In my own house I never wear shoes, slippers sometimes.

In my apartment at school I always wear shoes, much to the dismay to my flatmates who never wear shoes indoors.

Apparently, we follow Asian rules on shoes and most Americans are just supposed to wear their shoes everywhere indoors. I always figured we were following Ohio/Florida/New Hampshire/Georgia/Massachusetts rules, but whatevs.
