Can anyone recommend a general book on Hindu mythology?
I realized that besides the polytheism and the cows, I know functionally nothing about Hinduism.

From what I've read the polytheism is actually a bit complicated: Hinduism is monotheistic, but sees God (Brahman) as incomprehensible to humans except in his various aspects, which are the 'gods' as received in mythology. Have you heard the parable of the blind men and the elephant?

That parable is incomplete, though. It misses out the blind man who can't feel the elephant at all, and proclaims: "There is no elephant!"

I might be wrong, but from what I've heard, even that is not a view held by all Hindus - some are genuinely polytheistic in the conventional sense of the term.

Here's a quite interesting wiki link which gives an overview of Hindu philosophy, I just stumbled on for no very good reason.

I'm a Hindu and I know about the same as you. I should probably read a book on it too...

I'm not 100 % sure, but I'm under the impression that the hindu view of all the gods as aspect of Brahma(n), thereby a monoteistic view, is
1) Believed by some hindus as PhroX said, though it may actually be a small majority, and
2) A relatively recent development. Go back some hundred years or so and pure polytheism would dominate

I personally don't know any helping book

TIL cultural Hinduism is also a thing. :)

Yes. "Altered Maps 15: Rebel Without A Clue".

I just finished Legend of Korra season one and I don't know which thread I should go to rant about how awful it is. Please direct me to the appropriate area. Should I go to the arts forum?

(Also, people really like this show? Seriously? Urrggh...)
