Prime Minister of the Republic of Scandinavia, Eveliina Korpela, the first female leader of the nation, walked the long corridors of the old Presidential Palace, the high heels she was wearing echoing down the long marble corridor. Thought were racing through her head. She looked downcast and sad, and walked without the prestige she had when she was granted the Prime Ministership. After her tour of Norway, and then Finland the next month, she was astounded at their poverty in the region. Although the 10 Year plan, Operasjon Ombygger, was not directly going to help these people, the wealth of the country, she was told, would lift significantly. However, with the setbacks, she thought, the delays in the renovation of the Stockholm Campus of the University of Scandinavia, her legacy of change could be severely slowed down. However, despite this, and all of the other hurdles she had jumped so far, the good news was that the King Gustaf IV Memorial Bridge, spanning the Straight between Copenhagen, Denmark, and Sweden, was ahead of schedule, and all going well, should be finished, 3 months earlier, by the end of 1950.
She opened the Mahogany doors, and stepped into her office, which held a commanding view over Stockholm. Walking over to her desk, she ruffled through many pages, detailing Operasjon Ombygger, and sat down heavily. She pulled out one, and stared at if for a few moments, before placing it back. She pulled out the one detailing the construction of the new University of Scandinavia, and read through the list of cities the new University is to be constructed in. Stockholm (Renovation to existing building), Oslo (Construction of New Buildings needed), Helsinki (Upgrades to the existing University of Helsinki needed, new buildings needed), Copenhagen (expansion of the existing University of Denmark), Reykjavik (Site, new buildings needed), Nuuk (site, new buildings needed), Murmansk (Expansion of the existing, run down, University of Northern Russia (Closed)).
She pondered this for a moment, and then placed the file on her desk. walking out onto the balcony, she watched the night settle in, and she wondered if she was doing the right thing by Scandinavia. She had lived her whole life in Scandinavia, and had seen the Unification, under Gustaf the Great, and had slowly seen her nation, the United Kingdoms, as it was then, absorb blow after blow, from the Soviet Union, trying to hold onto the very rocks on which Scandinavia rested, to halt the Soviets before the could enter Europe through her. After the War, which had seen so much death and destruction, the Government tried it's utmost to keep the countries economy booming, but with the collapse of the ATO, trade decreased, and the Economy suffered. From that point on, this nation had been just a shade of it's former self. With the uprising in Norway, and the formation of the Ledig Norge, the Government tried to keep the country unified. The it capitulated to the group, and tried to hand over Norway. The Mad President, as he was known, intervened, and siezed control. Since then, the people have had very little trust in the Government, until now. People did not throw eggs at her motorcade now, but flowers and unsmelly things.
"I am trying to rebuild this nation," she said to her Butler, who had just bustled in with tea.
"Of course you are Ma'am, and doing a fine job at it."
However, she could not whole heartedly believe him, as many people still resented her Government, because they saw it as the people behind the Death of the Four Kings of Scandinavia.
Still, she thought, I will change this place for good.
