If you learned that therapeutic cloning (making stem cells to treat diseases like Parkinson's and Paralysis) could be done without making a viable embryo* first, would you ethically object to it? In other words, if no viable embryo is ever created.

(*a viable embryo is one which could grow into a fetus (and onward) if implanted into a prepared woman)

Edit: Please note that "Yes" means that you still have an issue with therapeutic cloning!

Edit: Something to point out. A 'therapeutic clone' is a cell type that is made from a person's DNA. This cell can be turned into any type of cell in the body, and will be used by placing these cells in the body, or by replacing parts of certain organs. Only a small clump of cells will be used to recover bone marrow or the liver or the brain. It is NOT the generation of anything more human.

*doh*

I thought the "yes I would" meant yes I would support it, not yes I would oppose it. your poll is very counter-intuitive. could a mod change the vote?

Go cloning!

Nope. Your wording implies they'd be trying to make some sort of embryo, just that it supposedly wouldn't be viable.

A better idea would be to try exhaust all possibilities with adult stem cells. Researchers don't even seem to be interested in that, they only seem to want to take the (*) approach that they know will inflame religious conservatives.

* EDIT: they -> the

Cloning especially this cloning looks really good:). Yeah Cloning:D!

Note to self:Replace MjM with a programmed clone.

I'm thoroughly sick of this topic, and wish that those who are so opposed to genetic engineering and cloning get a life.

Gotta stop the spam,I'm getting modded too much lately....

Surely you know how I fell about the subject, plus show me how they are going to do this. Also Adult Stem cells are very close to curing those diseases.

Why shouldn't both areas be pursued?

I cannot really understand, then, why people object.

The cell that the researchers are working with aren't viable (in any way, shape, or form). The current opinion is that making the cell viable (ie., able to grow into a person if implanted) is nearly impossible, and would require extraordinary work in the lab first (on the cell).

I thought the issue with therapeutic cloning was that an embryo was being destroyed. I guess there's more to it than that.

The cell that they use to get the stem cells from is just a cell. Massive alterations would need to be done to make it into a viable embryo. (Heck, a skin cell can be made into an embryo with enough laboratory work).

"made into an embryo". You said it yourself, they're making embryos. Stay out of God's domain, please! Mess with animals all you want, he gave us dominion over those.
