TIL: If you rob a bank, it's a criminal matter but if a bank robs you, then it's only a civil matter.
Funny that.
A long time ago there was a law change in California that made it mandatory that any crime would have a sentencing enhancement if you used a gun that would mean unavoidable prison time. The state ran a billboard and print ad campaign featuring the very simple business end view of a revolver with the motto "Use a gun, go to prison." I tell people all the time that I have no complaints about having been sent to prison, because they never had to put up billboards that said "rob a bank, go to prison." Everyone knew that.
But, yeah, when a bank jacks you it's a civil matter, and there is nothing in the least civil about trying to beat a bank in court because they will come with an absolutely endless supply of lawyers. Good luck, and don't go all Hell or High Water on them.
