TIL: If you rob a bank, it's a criminal matter but if a bank robs you, then it's only a civil matter.

Funny that.

A long time ago there was a law change in California that made it mandatory that any crime would have a sentencing enhancement if you used a gun that would mean unavoidable prison time. The state ran a billboard and print ad campaign featuring the very simple business end view of a revolver with the motto "Use a gun, go to prison." I tell people all the time that I have no complaints about having been sent to prison, because they never had to put up billboards that said "rob a bank, go to prison." Everyone knew that.

But, yeah, when a bank jacks you it's a civil matter, and there is nothing in the least civil about trying to beat a bank in court because they will come with an absolutely endless supply of lawyers. Good luck, and don't go all Hell or High Water on them.

Did people really get bent out of shape about the Victorian Soldier? If I recall correctly, the British Empire of that period drew regiments from all over the empire, leading to quite an ethnically diverse military, so a black Victorian soldier doesn't strike me as out of place at all. Am I incorrect in this thinking?

Oh it's nothing to do with me personally. I just read a story about how Bank of America jacked $2,000 from some couple and now they are fighting them in court to get it back.

I saw a story not too long ago where another Bank of America branch did something similar, lost the court case and then refused to pay. The couple was able to foreclose on the bank and managed to show up with the freaking Sheriff to begin hauling stuff out of the office to sell. They signed a check on the spot.

But yeah, far too often the story is the exact opposite.

TIL I learned a good saying that actually puts into words something I've thought for years: good politics isn't necessarily the same as good policy

And, in connection to your post, it's good policy to try and screw over the customers, since the system is skewed in the bank's favour. Of course, it's not good politics because sooner or later people can, say, start a Facebook hate campaign.

Nah. It's sort of like dealing with any bureau or bureau-protected entity. If you dry your grain under storage specs for moisture you get screwed since it makes it too light, and they calculate bushels by weight - thus you just gave free bonus matter. If you add moisture back in to regain the weight, it's called adulturation and not legal. The federal government removes your access to productive resources? All fine and dandy. You theoretically inconvenience an uninhabited plot of federal land? Everyone wants your head. It's not funny at all. It's just predictable dbaggery.

The costuming is more bizarre than any casting could be. When did Greeks in any era, let alone the Mycenaean, wear helmets that look like that? At least black people actually exist.
