TIL: Today I Learned

TIL that Pence was a radio talk show host before he was elected governor.

I learned about the MS Estonia sinking, one of the deadliest maritime disasters in history. Among peace-time European maritime disasters, it ranks second behind the Titanic. With over 500 Swedish casualties, it also ranks among the deadliest days in Swedish history.

This sad and haunting article talks about the accident in detail. It depicts how the sinking was a "brutal selection": a handful of people in their cabins heard strange watery sounds and metallic crashing sounds (the front of the ship breaking off and taking on water), grasped something was wrong, and bolted down the halls and up the stairs for the upper decks. Many survivors were in their underwear or even naked; people who dithered, waited to get dressed, and so on couldn’t make it out as the ship rapidly started tipping over. Younger or more agile people had to decide whether to abandon their families and spouses or go down with them.

Well I meant he didn't sound like a robot back then as he now does.

Oh. Well, yeah, his voice and cadence were a lot better. I think he realized that on radio all you have is your voice and if you sound robotic no one will listen.

That link was totally awesome. I read the whole story and was amazed. Thank you.

It is a decent account of the night's events... but for better or worse does not deign to explain the actual cause behind the disaster.

Lot of decidedly weird/unexplained stuff has created a bevy of conspiracy theories still floating around: https://www.reddit.com/r/Unresolved...ng_of_mss_estonia_1994_852_lives_lost_not_an/

Whilem Gustlov evacuating German civilians went down with an estimated 9000
Ivan would later drink himself into an early grave to try and forget the terriable slaughter

I never feel at ease when deep down in the womb of a ship
Even when during the trip going back to my car deep down just to pick up something from there.

*Castillian ;), but that is highly valuable information nevetheless.

There was a pretty good youtube video about the sinking that explained how the front door locking mechanism failed one after the other and the front of the ship opened up and let the water flow in.

Link to video.

Lethal white syndrome is a condition where a foal who is homogyzous for the frame overo colour gene is born with a malfunctioning colon with no nerves in it. Since they're unable to pass stool, they colic and die within a few days. It's called that because they're born with all-white coats.

I already knew about this, but TIL it happens because (I may be misunderstanding, Wikipedia isn't always easy to read) of a mistake in a regulatory gene that controls the stem cells that get turned into both nerve cells and pigment-producing cells.

TIL that West Point may be good at teaching people to tell people to kill people (or whatever the officer class mostly does), but they are not very good at spelling. In the museum I noted 2 spelling mistakes; Welch Guard (should be Welsh Guard) and Rumanian rocket launcher (should be Romanian).

They guard grape juice and shoot rockets of rum. Accurate, stet.
