U.N. Approves Airstrikes to Halt Attacks by Qaddafi Forces

As a Conservative; "Nice Job! Screw Congress - You're the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces so just act like you've got a pair. I especially like how the No Fly Zone seems to target a lot of traditional air units like tanks, artillery and infantry!"

No it doesn't; the No Fly Zone and the airstrikes on ground targets are two parts of the same operation.

It's Al-Qadhdhafi(yyu)
dh = english "th" as in "mother". The second a in QadhdhAfi is longer. the "yyu" at the end is only pronounced by rare madmen, such as myself, sometimes.

"dhdh" looks horrible, it's reasonable to simplify it to "Al-Qaddafi" or Qaddafi.

In some arabic dialects, Q(af) is pronounced as european G, and that's why one can see his name spelt (Al-)Gaddafi. Because that's about how it is pronounced in dialect.

ahh yes , once again there is a conference and once again the "rebel rabble" retreats in defeat . Why not , Bingazi was in mortal danger to justify the French attack and the inevitable rest . Now that Greenflags did not fall by scare - as it is still scare tactics - an increase in scale and scope is necessary . We continiously hear the devastating airpower and how it took Trablus by surprise . Oh really ? Coalition air strikes are yet to emulate the F-111s of 1991 and "their" tank plinking , didn't they average 50 a night ? The way Greenflags melted away are a sure sign that they have a keener sense of history when compared to journalists reporting from the country ; that is if they were ever in a mood to challenge the West . The journalists are sure to show it as a grand battle but it is somewhat off the mark . Tricolors provide the boots and they are so happy put pistols to their heads and pull knieves across their throats , combined with the air attacks they are the stick ( there was a guy who would have bit Kaddafi amd mind us he was a peaceful man) , the carrot is the Western spinelessness and aversion of battle . If Kaddafi leaves providing the supremely superlative almost godlike Western leaders with yet another cheap victory against tyranny all will be well and yet another plan will be realised . So how much a coincidence it is that the rebels have been turned "back" from a point that approximates the the exact line that divides Libya into two ? Saw the defeat on Al Jazeera , some smoke on the horizon and all the pick-up trucks start running away , all the while the reporter talks of Kaddafi forces you can see the rebel 122 mm rockets flying out from the smoke and dust . Incredibly easy to disprove yet it is repeatedly on TV , maybe it is a sign that one can lie and get away with it ? Showing who is the mightiest of all ? The city of Sirte fell without a fight . OK , though the freedom fighters were 70 to 140 km east of the city at the time? Al Jazeera even reportedly reported American jets fighting enemy planes , complete ox dropping , who fights USAF and can survive ?????????? No worry , even the web nuts are assured the Serbian mercenaries ( typically written with lots of smileys) were dealt with . Nema problema for oil deals . Once 20 million dollars a day becomes Tricolor property it will be heaven on Earth . So again on yesterday , American broadcasts into Libya were on the news , the Greenflags are advised not to fire on their countrymen -albeit the countrymen can fire on Greenflags- and explicitly warned not to do anything against their infrastructure . It is clear when somebody bombs Tobruk oil terminal , US will go nuclear . Will see . And Barack Hussein Obama sez the history is not on the side of Kaddafi , what makes him to think it is on his side ?

indeed a solution is needed . How about this one ? Since military interventions give democracy a bad name , no NATO country will get a contract in Libya for 10 years , that is of the civilian type . Arabs are still remembered for their "destruction in reconstruction " of Bosnian mosques and cemeteries as they were kinda of another fashion . So ditto . France , UK and US do not get any security contract for 50 years , that is in a sweep from fighter jets to teargas canisters and batons for police . Other NATO members , in the name of equality will have to only content with 49 years 11 months 3 weeks . This way attacking warships in port can be justified on democracy and protecting innocent merchantmen and the godlike leaders will be enshrined as good men ? No ? Guess we won't be invited to the Royal Wedding ,then . And of course our foreign minister is supposed to have said we are satisfied with new arrangements that gives NATO the command and the rights . No , we are not . Don't we see the writing on the wall ? Don't we hear the International Criminal court , which must try Kaddafi for crimes against his people ? Considering the West being long prepared , Mr Hague and Mr Sarkozy will be also there as accomplices for pushing a dictator of 42 years into using weapons on his people instead of wads of money . Mr. Berlusconi ? Only if he survives tax evasion !

Your argument isn't actually all that bad, but can I suggest formatting your posts (use decent sentances and paragraphs, for one) so that we don't look at them and think 'oh god, not another wall of ramble again?'

Yes, the International Criminal Court is a mockery of justice, a political tool with which to threaten rulers of third-world, weak countries and celebrate the immaculate heroes who start the "wars on terror" or "wars on tyranny", using the same tactics and ruthlessness whenever convenient. And most of the pathetic european "left" which keeps claiming to be "anti-imperialist" and "anti-war" falls for it.

Anyone with half a brain can see it. Anyone with half a brain can see that it will remain so. It's not this sad reality which offends me. It's the sheer arrogance of those who organize the propaganda cover for these conflicts, who assume that the vast majority of the population is dumb enough to swallow it.
No, it may not even be that... it's the fact that they have been proven right time and again!

Incredibly easy to disprove yet it is repeatedly on TV , maybe it is a sign that one can lie and get away with it ?

why... yes. Did you need this episode to get to this conclusion? Did you really believe in the whole Kosovan affair, just to make an example?

I found it decently formatted and readable. I'd like to suggest to the many posters of this forum who often fill it with comments such as this, to instead improve their reading skills and/or concentration.

No, it could definitely use a lot of formatting to make it more readable. r16's post had some good points here and there but it was a pain to read.

Maybe it only looks well-formatted to somebody who's ESL.

the current situation looks bad for the rebels... they only own cities up to ajdabiya.

And now imagine how it is when English isn't your first language. Come on r16, if you really are as knowledgeable/thoughtful as your posts are supposed to suggest, invest some time in adequately presenting said knowledge/thoughtfulness.

If France arms the rebels, then they might have a chance. It's all coming down to quality of weaponry. Until there are well armed rebel troops on the ground, Gadhafi will still have the upper hand.

It's also a matter of training and organization. The rebel forces aren't an army, nor are most of the individual rebels soldiers.

If the rebels are going to force Gaddafi out without involvement from Coalition ground forces, they need a breather for a few weeks so they can get at least some basic training in. There are supposed to be some former Libyan army units with the rebels, so they'd have some kind of a core for a military organization.

An APILAS is of no use against a tank if you don't know how to use it.

Really? I thought they were at least at a winning stalemate and mostly advancing, has this changed? With the support they've got dynamics are everything.

Most weapons are pretty simple until something goes wrong with them; they should just be able to drop leaflets and be fine.

I kind of doubt the rebels will win now without any outside intervention. It seems they can't hold a candle to Gaddafis army.

I do want them to win but I still don't think we should be that quick to get involved.

I mean look what happened when we aided the Afghans against the Soviets back in the day. :mischief:

There is a difference. Libya is not being invaded and the Mujahideen in Afghanistan rose up against foreign occupation, not popular resistance against internal forces.

I don't see how the rebel forces winning is going to set up a regime favorable to the west however which is the problem from a foreign policy perspective.

I was just saying that the Mujahideen and the Libyan rebels are not the same thing.

Tom Marino (R-PA) said:
Where does it stop? Do we go into Africa next? I don’t want to sound callous or cold, but this could go on indefinitely around the world.
Cold and callous is not how he is sounding.

Yes, the Mujahideen in Afghanistan actually had a somewhat logical reason to receive foreign support: the other side was getting it too.
