Use of Cannabis in Adolescence Linked to Lower IQ

The article also mentions the "lost" IQ is restored after stopping cannabis use - so it's not permanent and therefore not really harmful (depending on how long that takes for it to become restored - didn't read the linked article, just OP).

Unfortunately not. From the OP.

Stopping or reducing cannabis use failed to fully restore the lost IQ.

I'm sure drinking and smoking heavily before you are 18 isn't too damn healthy either.

Not a particularly good argument for prohibition IMHO, especially since it isn't exactly rare even while prohibited.

If you live long enough you'll note that "news" stories repeat themselves. Conventional wisdom 40years ago was that pot makes you dumb and robs you of initative. This falls in the category of the local news story I saw about a year ago in which the breathless anchor reported that you can freeze meat in plastic bags.

This doesn't really surprise me, but I have several friends who smoke and are still straight A students.. ;)

I'm pretty sure JAMA run an article about marijuana use negatively affecting memory in some capacity, in the 1990s. I'll have to google scholar it sometime.

What's the standard deviation on IQ tests anyway?

It seems to be a characteristic of mammals, and possibly other organisms too, to seek this kind of stimulation, or change, to the CNS.

I wonder why.

Is it the mythical Tree of Knowledge, do you think?
