Vancouver Gay Pride Parade

I almost agree with you. I think that most people would respect gays more if they realized they're pretty normal. Parades like this are pretty ridiculous in general, and give a lot of people the wrong impression.

That said, though, a lot of people believe in greater sexual freedom. Not in the sense that people should have reckless, unsafe sex with everyone. But that there is nothing wrong with displaying one's body, with having safe sex with someone you're attracted to, and so on. And yeah, some people even think that kids are smart enough to understand that, without eventually doing something that puts them at risk.

I'm not really sure what I would want my kids to see. I definitely think I will tell them more about sex than they will learn in health class, and sooner. But I think the gay pride parade has some things that go just a little too far.

This happened earlier in the month, and yes I have some negative comments to make. If this bothers you, go read another thread.

The problem I have is not with the parade itself, it's the manner in which its participants chose to conduct themselves. They walk around virtually in the nude, sometimes literally in the nude, dry humping each other, shouting lewd comments at anyone insane enough to bring their children to the event, and basically demean themselves in the worst way possible.

Here's some photos.

And of course, there's much worse stuff that can't be shown on this "family friendly" forum.

You can't look at that stuff and honestly tell me it's family friendly. Why on Earth would anyone, gay or straight, bring their children to look at such displays like that?

All gays do when they conduct themselves in that manner is make themselves look like a carnival sideshow. They confirm every single negative gay stereotype out there. Now gay marriage is legal in Canada, so it's not like the gay rights movement is morally or intellectually relevant anymore, but displays at events like this do a tremendous disservice to the gay rights movement overall. They trivialize themselves, and rather than making the case that they're normal human beings.

They should be seeking to portray themselves as regular people. I'm all for pride parades and celebration of differences, but this kind of stuff takes it too far and only damages their own cause.

Not that it should have been stopped or broken up. If they want to demean themselves, that's fine. But the police should have handed out tickets for lewd conduct in public or public nudity.

Discuss.

you are a homophobe or at least someone with absolutely no connection to the gay community or gay individuals what-so-ever. perhaps you are forgetting that this is a gay pride parade and that you're equally welcome to have your own straight parade in similiar fashion. of course that just doesn't quite make sense, I couldn't see straight people dressed half naked in a straight parade even if there was one anyways.

BUT you can change that PASI. YOU CAN HAVE A NUDE STRAIGHT PARADE TOO.

you need to first understand the premise of such a parade before you spit out your anti-gay rhethoric all the while acting as though you're some moral compass for B.C. families in attacking GAY PARADES.

Amusing... I'm a homophobe, even though I explicitly stated that my beef is with a lack of public decency and not with the concept of a Gay Pride Parade itself? I'm a homophobe because I have a problem with someone prancing around in ass-less pants wearing only an oversized belt? Curious logic you have there...

I understand the point of this parade; it was to celebrated a miniscule minority. If the intent was to show solidarity with the other miniscule gay minorities in other countries, they can do that without getting nude, dry humping each other, shouting lewd comments at people dumb enough to bring their little kids, et al. There's no progress to be made, gay marriage is entirely legal, so that cannot have been the point.

Of course it wasn't. The point was to celebrate alternative sexuality. That might not be your bag, but not something that I think is particularly problematic.

I don't know. Stuff like this should be legal (free expression, right to assemble, blah, blah, blah) but I wouldn't endorse public displays of sexuality, homo- or hetero-. Save this stuff for smoky bars and steamy websites. :p

Public displays of sexuality occur all the time:

- Kissing
- Hugging
- Holding hands
etc

I don't see why this parade is such a problem... its not intended to arouse.

As long as it's not seriously crammed down someone's throat I have no problem with it.

What is its intention then? To show off how vulgar homosexuality is?

Yes, and to show people that this is what gay people do, so obviously they're the same as straight people and thus should not be discriminated against.

Then again if straight pride parades existed and a bunch of half-naked girls were in it, making out with random people, I'd probably take off my pants and join in the fun!

Bright day
Those are called carnivals.

It's the "gay pride parade"
not the "gay pride parade"

How can you be parade pride about something sexual and expect not to act sexual? I'd imagine a straight pride parade would be about the same, and not young, well dressed married couples walking down the street holding hands and proclaiming "monogamy, marriage, and in the straight fashion!"

Naw it'd be nearly naked folks romping about going "being straight is fun!" (cue voice crack on the "fun")

Jeez, its all in good fun. I'm sorry I was too busy to make this year's SF one.

My view in a nutshell. Except Im sorry I missed Brighton not SF.

They feel a lot better about themselves by putting on a free party? Good work fellas. You dont want to see it then dont. It's not like they keep the location a secret.

Live and let live. If gay people, or just naked people in general, scare you then avoid a small area of town - let em have their fun, and the rest of us can potter down for a couple of hours and have a jar or two watching the wirdness.

Its vulgar, because its abnormal? Does that mean is vulgar to live to 110? Its certainly not normal...
Living to an old age is not abnormal, being homosexual, from what nature has told us, is. I don't see how there is any denying it.

1) Abnormal =/= vulgar. It's a misuse of the word.

2) Living to an old age is abnormal under any definition that being gay is abnormal (ie. not the norm/average)

3) Define "natural".
