I am hating how the popular media is playing this. This really is not the best way of informing people, because there will be too great of a delay in the disconfirming data, and so these 'Einstein was wrong!' might become ingrained in people.

Ingrained? Give it a couple of days more and it'll be utterly forgotten!

I'd be happy if people knew what Einstein's discoveries actually were.
 
Is there a ballpark figure on how long we'll have to wait before this can be either confirmed or denied?

Weeks? Months? Years?
 
My guess that if a confirmation can't be achieved soon, it will be forgotten. Otherwise...

It could be denied in weeks, if an error is found quickly.

For confirmation we would have to wait years. Even if everything was into place to start a confirmation measurement right now, the measurement itself would take years. If I understand the paper correctly, the data for this measurement was accumulated over 5 years.
 
If CERN doesn't discover an error on its own, we'd have to wait until Kamiokande or Fermilab have reproduced the experiment to move one step closer to confirmation (or can deny it). I hope it doesn't take them another 5 years, though.

It will take them several years though. At first they have to install some precise timing system like the one used in this experiment and then the measurement itself will take some time. According to the paper they used data from three years to get this result. Unless the neutrino generation or detection can be increased by a significant amount (and I don't think this can be easily done) one should expect a similar amount of time until the necessary statistics can be accumulated. So I would guess at least three years and probably around five.

Results might come sooner, if another experiment can already do this measurement and use already recorded data to test this. But I don't think that's the case.

In the mean time this experiment will continue to run and with more data they should be able to see whether there is an energy dependence or not. If neutrinos are indeed faster than light, there has to be an energy dependence, as the speed measured here does not match with low-energy neutrino results from supernova measurements.

You need to develop better taste in womynz. For example, Katie Holmes and Rachel Leigh Cook have unimpressive boobs, but they're probably the two most adorable humans who have ever lived. They may also be twins separated at birth.

Boobs big enough can create a visual singularity, drawing all eyes toward it at warp speed. (The exact warp factor is determined based on the size of the boobs and scumminess of the guy in question.)

Awwww... but it was getting funny!

Anyway... since the neutrinos hit the detector after they were fired, rather than before, the ability to travel faster than light does not guarantee the ability to travel through time.
 
I'm traveling through time right now, I'm just not going any faster then the rest of the universe (while not technicaly true, I don't feel like detailing how Newtonian/Einsteinian physics don't really hold true at the extremes).
