Steph, good points, but I tried to think of likely answers. I cant imagine someone answering the question "What are you?" with "Married" or "Single" but I agree they do say alot about a person.

I added political persuasion and culture to the OP.

Guess you never watched B5....

I'd answer 'a man'. So I put gender down, even though I'm telling the inquirer what my species is too.

on the OPs list, I would go with religion. But in reality, if some random person just walked up to me saying "what are you?", i'd reply with, "i'm a genius".

Personally, I consider being married with two kids much more important than the political persuasion. But, hey, that's me. If you are more interested by your politicians than your wife or your children, that's your right.

It depends on context. In the Eastern U.S., when they ask, "Hey, what ahhhh you, anyways?" they are definitely asking about race.

My first answer would usually be profession.

I picked "profession" since our rank and station in life really determine our existence in our world in most cases. However,i have to say it takes a unique person to transcend the boundaries of what seperate one from other people of other professions.

CFC membership! you never realize how much you need something till ya risk losing it.

Why is everyone always projecting? I must do it too I guess. (sigh) No Steph, Im not saying thats more important to me. On the contrary I think I agreed with you that marital status is important. As I said, I tried to think of likely answers. First answers. When asked 'What are you?' I doubt very much the first answer that pops into anyones mind would be their marital status. That doesnt mean I dont think its a perfectly valid answer.
