Since you never know what those wacky Cardinals will do, we should all prepare for the possibility that we will get the call. I mean, with so many Catolics, they can't possibly have a list of all of them; so even if, like me, you're not under the jurisdiction of the pope, you still may be mistaken for one and chosen.

Most popes take the naame of a predecessor. The available names are below:

Adrian VII
Agapetus III
Agatho II
Alexander IX
Anastasius V
Anicetus II
Anterus II
Benedict XVI
Boniface X
Caius II
Callixtus IV
Celestine VI
Clement XV
Cletus II
Conon II
Constantine II
Cornelius II
Damasus III
Deusdedit III
Dionysius II
Donus II
Eleuterus II
Eugene V
Eusebius II
Eutychian II
Evaristus II
Fabian II
Felix V
Formosus II
Gelasius III
Gregory XVII
Hilarius II
Honorius V
Hormisdas II
Hyginus II
Innocent XIV
John XXIV
John Paul III
Julius IV
Lando II
Leo XIV
Liberius II
Linus II
Lucius IV
Marcellinus II
Marcellus III
Marcus II
Martin VI
Militiades II
Nicholas VI
Paschal III
Paul VII
Pelagius III
Peter II
Pius XIII
Pontian II
Romanus II
Sabinianus II
Sergius V
Severinus II
Silverius III
Silvester IV
Simplicius II
Sirisius II
Sisinnius II

Soter II
Stephen XI
Symmachus II
Telesphorus II
Theodore III
Urban IX
Valentinus II
Victor IV
Vigilius III
Vitalian II
Zacharias II
Zephyrinus II
Zosimus II

Personally, I am totally going with Zacharias II.

Steve I. I need not copy others (except for whoever was the first person to be named Steven).

What about Biggus Dickus II?

Hadrianus VII. No contest!

I'm pretty sure it's Hadrianus in Latin. Adrian would be Italian. And Hadrian VI was the last English pope.

"Hadrian the VII" also happens to be the title of a truly weird minor classic of Victorian litearture. Written by the strange Fredrick William Rolfe, AKA "Baron Corvo", it is perhaps the most monstruous novel of wish-fulfillment ever conceived.

Rolfe/Corvo had been denied into the clergy. (Too interested in little boys, aesthetics etc., his faith was doubted.)
In "Hadrian VII" his alter-ego by some fluke (like the one SN hints at) is elected Pope, and sets about reorganising the catholic church according to his own preference. (Ultra-conservative even by 19th c. standards.)

That is until one day he is gunned down by an anarchist, at which point: "The world, sobbed, sighed, wiped its mouth: and experienced extreme relief."

A weird book, but very informative about the protocoll for papal elections among other things. :)

How about Conon (the barbarian) ? :p

no Matthew huh? is my name not biblical enough for the Pope? :)
How are these names chosen?

Ozzy Osborne? That'd do me fine :D.

Good choice, Zacharias is my confirmation name. Too bad I haven't been to church in years, darn agnosticism. :)

Hilarius II.
I was going to go with Sylvester and then only hire people to work at the Vatican who have lisps. But Ive got to go with Hilarius, its the most ridiculous name on the list. Heres a portrait of the original Hilarius:

Yeah so what IS the rule for Papal names? Can it be anything or does it have to be a saint's name or what?

Could you be... Borat Sagdiyev? (Jagshemesh...)

Innocent XIV

Innocent the Fourteenth XD

Simplicius II

Christ, some of these names are stupid

Speaking of which... I wish I'd picked a different confirmation name... I liked Phillip at the time but now I wish I picked Tony or something weird like... Heinrich or... Zephyrinus what a name.

Doh! I thought this would be a name-generator. I could have been Glenius I (looks like Genius) but I suppose Simplicius III (looks like Simplicity) would more suitable

Seems like it would require an ego of biblical proportions to take the papal name Peter II.

I'd have to go with Linus II, and people could assume either a Peanuts or Linux reference. :p
