What type of place would you like to live in?

Both the neighborhood (city, rural, what country?) and what type of abode (apartment, house, house-boat, van down by the river?) and who with (all alone, with friends, wife, 17 hippies & 3 dogs?).

What features would you definitely want (and not want) in your neighborhood and in your home?

And what's your current living situation & it's pros & cons if you feel comfortable sharing?

Cheers.

Well, where I live has always been in my location information. I've mentioned I live in an apartment, and the only other person here is my cat.

Where I would like to live includes a variety of places. I like the country because it's quieter, cleaner, and there's more nature. Unfortunately, I need certain city amenities and services, so that doesn't really give me the option.

The only way to reconcile this is if I had a TARDIS or transporter. Actually, the TARDIS would be more useful, since while it's interesting to visit historical sites, it would be even more interesting to visit them before they became historical sites (as in when they were still being used in everyday life).

My ideal home would be part castle, part cabin, part spaceship, part temperate rainforest, part my old home with my grandparents, and situated in the Rocky Mountains. And it would have lots of space for books, crafts, gaming, cats, art, and my penguin collection (I'm actually starting to run out of room for that).

I like living in urban areas. I like being able to walk or bike most places I need to go. I don't ever count on good public transportation though, this being America and all. Where I live in Irvine is pretty much ideal but it looks like I'll have to move to find work in the next couple of months or so. Irvine isn't really that urban, most of it is decidedly suburban. Fortunately, I happen to live in the one part of it that really is urban even if it's not exactly downtown LA. There are a ton of shops and businesses in walking distance from where I live and tons of recreation areas as well. All of the residencies around me are massive apartment blocks rather than individual homes that dominate most of the rest of the city. And I'm also fairly close to LA and all the cool stuff there and there are ton of jobs in the area.

I've spent most of my life in suburbs and rural areas and I don't like them. I don't like having to drive to get literally anywhere and I especially hated having to drive over half an hour (usually closer to a full hour) to go do fun stuff. I'm also not a fan of Confederate flags and coal-rollers and tacticool fashion which are all prevalent in the rural and suburban areas I've lived.

The con of urban life is it's very expensive. That's about it in my book.

I have a specific type of housing near the woods planned. Not too far from big cities - less than a hour ride optimally. I would have 2-3 small houses there, barn and probably some animals. Nothing too big, because I plan keeping the place clean. I would live there with my wife. A nearby river would be a plus. I like swimming.

Right now I live in a flat about 25 mins from city centre. The flat is built in the middle of a meadow so it is quite good for a big city, but 9 storey house with all the neighbours can get busy. I want more silence and peace.

I‘d like to have an apartment very high in a (free-standing) tower with a good roundview. I like to see and feel the weather when around, although those towers being fully clothed in glass nowadays makes them very bad for (room and other) climate. I do however want a garden, which is kinda difficult up that high so there would need to be something else.

Of course, I‘m neither gonna win the lotto nor marry someone rich, so that‘s the unrealistic dream. So I guess a roof apartment on a common five-story urban house is fine :) (At the moment it‘s a sunny apartment in a quite inner courtyard near the city centre, everything walkable or bikeable or publc transport, fine for me, I don‘t need a car right now)

I live in a city with my wife and 3 cats. The neighborhood is urban, being dominated by apartment buildings and condos, but we live in a modest-sized single family dwelling, though. Shopping is within walking distance. I live about 15 minutes drive from the center of two cities, each with populations around 250k.

Food is probably the biggest pro, it's cheaper, more available, and a better selection in the city, as compared to rural living (albeit anecdotal). My parents lived adjacent to a horse farm, with the only grocery store being a family owned joint about 10 minutes from their house. A Walmart was built in the town to the west while I was in high school.

Ideally a vast underground lair perhaps powered by a nuclear reactor with enough fuel to last ~50000 years, with air and water filtration/reuse systems and a hydroponics farm. Also an awesome video game setup

Small city, cool dry temperate climate, English speaking, good cultural scene, decent choice of bars and restaurants, decent bookshops. I think I've just described Edinburgh. Cardiff is too wet!
Flat in a small block with some communal greenery and play areas.

I've always wanted to live in a self-sufficient bunker . Seriously this is not a joke ;) Well self sufficient enough to produce its own electricity, heating, oxygen for the underground, some food in form of vegetables and be able to recycle water. On top of that I hope it would be entertaining enough to be able to stay for a really long time. Close to water so I can have electricity mill :) Supplemented by solar panels , maybe even geo-thermal and in a case of emergency fosil fuel generator. ( I doubt anyone would let me to run an atomic generator xD) I'd like to have garden both on the ground, and underground (possibly a testing lab for hydroponics). Of course the sat-uplink would be nice and in case of satelite black-out - classic ham radio with strong antenna. I wouldn't want to be far away from civilization, just close enough to be able to shop for supplies I couldn't produce myself. If some girl would be crazy enough to join me in my bunker I wouldn't mind :D Possibly some true friends of mine and some animals would be nice to have around :) (and yeah.... some stimpaks as well :mischief:)

Right now I live in the city center of a medium size city, where I do not require a car, can walk to most important places, and cycle to work within 10 minutes. To the opposite of my appartment is a medium size bar, which funnily does not cause any trouble, not even at bigger dance parties at the weekend. The train connection here brings me within 30 minutes to the 2 biggest cities in the country, where I can easily access what I don't have in the city itself.
The city itself could be a tad bit bigger, but otherwise it's quite optimal, I would say. The features mentioned are quite important (medium to big size, but everything easily available).

I live in an appartment in a house with 5 other parties. My appartment is a tad bit small, so for a realistic option I'd like to have 5-10 sqm more, and some storage space/basement, but also here, otherwise it's what I need.

If I had endless money though, I'd go nuts. Not sure if I'd like to have a villa, but in my massive garden, I'd like to have a fake Greek temple like the one in Schönbrunn castle (this one https://antikeinwien.wordpress.com/2017/07/05/der-schonbrunner-schlosspark/romische_ruine/ ; yeah, okay, it's roman, whatever), and also an Egyptian temple, like e.g. the one in Madrid, https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple_of_Debod . Maybe that's enough already :D.

@The_J speaking of the ancients how about a hanging-gardens style pyramid shaped garden ? like The Hanging Gardens of Babylon

It is by far my favourite civ wonder - not because of what it do but because how it looks :D I know but I'm not always all utilitarian ;) I've always imagined The Hanging Gardens as an epitome of ancient aesthetics. Imagined them to be really beautiful in the ancient time, not only beautiful but usefull in the terms of producing food. I have always wondered anyway : Why is that ancient people like Babylonians and Inca prefered pyramid shaped gardens over the classic flat ones .

Oh and btw. the Roman ruins in Wien are really awesome !

Get @Kyriakos to design it for you. :p

I like suburban life. My house is fine, I just wish I had a finished basement, a larger laundry room, a bigger yard and a 3 car garage.

I live in a small house, with a wife and two cats. 10 minute drive gets you to the beach and farmlands, 5 minutes drive to the CBD.

Ideally a slightly warmer city in a country with an ozone layer above it so you don't get burned in 15 minutes or if you forget sunscreen you don't get blistered ears.

Bigger house with a nice basement where I can set up my 80s and 90s tech games room/library.

Well probably buy a new house in the next year or two maybe go overseas, skipping winter for a year or two is appealing.

Previously I've:
rented an efficency apartment in a town of 50,000 (row of apartments, not a multi stories building)
Rented a trailer with 3 other guys, in the country (right off highway at least)
Rented upstairs of a house in same town mentioned earlier, with and without a roommate)
Became a 'homeowner' by owning a trailer in the 'suburbs' of that town, again with and without a roommate, and before and after getting married.
Rented upstairs of a house in the country (miles away from any villages or major highway) with family.
Currently a 'normal' homeowner with family in a small town of 3500 or so. 40 minutes away from the larger town mentioned earlier.
No garage, but walk-out basement. Was three bedroom, making it 4.

It goes without saying, the smaller the town the fewer opprtunities for employment, so most commute to other towns for work.
This town of 3500 doesn't have alot, but has some basic stuff. Sure, there won't be concerts here, but that was never important to me. Most shopping is at Wal-Mart, beyond that we have to drive 40 minutes for more serious shopping, as the other shops are pretty limited in selection and typically higher priced.

Trailer park was ethnically diverse for my Chinese stepdaughter. The girls her age were white twins, one from Philippines, a Mexican, and a black girl. Some girls and a boy from Laos lived in houses and an apartment right next to the park.

The trailer with four of us was a three bedroom, but the smallest was about the size of a walk in closet, the fourth guy slept on the couch.

Good thing about renting is not having to shovel snow and mow grass. Good thing about trailers is shovelling and mowing areas are much smaller. But I prefer the larger yard and bigger driveway in my current house. Maybe I'll feel differently when I'm retired.

My parents bought an RV, then realized they don't really use it so they sold it. Sold their house to get an apartment, now they are back to buying a house. Sometimes you don't really know what you like until you try it.

I live in a fairly roomy house with my husband, three cats, two fish, and a tarantula. I sometimes have house guests, like right now my brother is staying here. I enjoy living in a small town like I do, because I find big cities to be too crowded, busy, and noisy for me. But I don't like living out in rural areas, because I like having access to shopping and such just a short drive away.

If my income was about 3x what it is now, I'd like to live in a larger house with regular cleaning service, in a really nice area (and not Michigan!)

If I had millions of dollars, I'd want to live in a castle (but with modern amenities, like electricity, plumbing, internet, and such), somewhere in the mountains preferably, with a lake and clear skies. I'd want to have permanent house staff in residence (paid very well), and dozens of cats and other animals. Also plenty of children.

If I'm in a total fantasy, I'd want to live on a remote tropical island that never has bad weather and is always super pleasant. But somehow I still get regular deliveries and I have internet access (think Nim's Island, but without the monsoons)

For me: An urban metro area; I wouldn't have to live downtown, but I don't want to have to own a private car. Temperate-to-cold climate; I can't take hot weather. It'd have to be easy enough to get by in English. It would also need to be multicultural, open, cosmopolitan. Homogeneous populations freak me out - even in places where I fit in, I still feel on edge, like "something's wrong here." When you let people be, they naturally diversify; where there's apparent conformity, people are responding to some kind of external pressure, and there are people who feel oppressed or constrained (and it's probably not just a feeling). If I ever found myself in a place where everybody looked, sounded, acted and dressed like me, I wouldn't be able to get out of there fast enough.
