Dear Diary:

I was waiting near Lincoln Center for the M66 bus to take me to the East Side. As I waited, an older woman standing near me engaged me in conversation to pass the time.

Eventually, she asked about my occupation. I told her I was a retired lawyer and that I had previously worked at an advertising agency.

She brightened and said she was also in a second career. She had retired from teaching at a public school and was now an actress.

“That’s great,” I said. “Might I have seen you perform?”

“If you ever watch ‘Law & Order’ you may have,” she said. “I sometimes play the dead body. I am very good at lying still!”

Dept Q popped up on my phone the other day - netflix alert.
I... erm... queued that one last week, just on the strength of the trailer (yes, it is set in Edinburgh).

Will likely start watching soon -- possibly with wifey, now that we're done with The Tourist S2 (which got at least as deranged as S1, and set up a little teaser for a possible S3 in the final shot...).

Just One Look on Netflix. Another excellent crime thriller. This one originates in Poland with great English dubbing. Interesting characters and a plot worthy of following.

Just finished Department Q on Netflix; a series format of crime novels that have previously been adapted for feature films.

Was fine; the longer runtime format gives the characters room to breathe.

Yeah, no need for me to explain what it is, since you did that already brilliantly!

I hope it gets renewed for at least a second season, because chronologically the next novel/film (Fasandræberne/The Absent One) is my favorite of the six films released so far. I want to see what they can do with that storyline with +8 hours of runtime to really explore it.

There are 11 Department Q novels and knowing Netflix, we'll be lucky to get three seasons or so, before they cancel it.

And yes, Akram is awesome! :)

I've just started watching a series from about 10 years ago called True Nightmares. A delightful anthology of true (mostly true, anyway) gruesome stories, hosted by Todd Robbins*. The stories are good, the narration is good, but the anachronisms are getting hard to ignore. I guess they didn't have the budget to do proper-period clothes, automobiles, etc from 100 years ago.

*Todd Robbins is a performer whose act I haven't seen in many years, but from what I remember he mixes humor, magic, and most importantly old sideshow acts like sword swallowing, glass eating, and hammering a big nail into his nostril. "It's just like comedy!"

Blindspot on Netflix. I'm pretty sure I saw this back in 2020, but I jumped into it again and I only recollect the premise. It is a very good action thriller. It appears to be new on Netflix so I'm don't where I saw it before. It has 5 seasons.

Been watching The Bear, which came recommended to me by my brother in law a while ago, when he heard I've been watching cooking shows like Top Chef.. and a Korean cooking show (class wars?).. and other cooking, chef, and restaurant related shows. There was a cool series on Netflix about street food in asia for instance, a cool 4 episode show focusing on noodles, and a couple other shows.

All good stuff. I'm glad I watched all of that before diving into The Bear. I've never worked in a restaurant or anything remotely resembling a restaurant. The closest must have been a bank. So it was good to get a bit of restaurant-related context under my belt before getting into this show, as I think it allowed me to enjoy it more. I really like the characters. I wish they didn't have the Faks, but at the same time they have their place too, I suppose. A well written show, great strong characters and solid drama between them, cool flashback episodes, cool shots of Chicago, and even Polish content. I'm near the end of season 3 and I have really been enjoying the ride.

One criticism, if you can call it that, is the first episode of season 3, which was just like a long montage basically, with random food prep shots. I feel that they didn't really have enough script and strethced it out. It kinda worked, but often it was just too much. They should have figured out a bit more to say about Carmen instead of just showing scallops and soup. And yeah, I get it, that was his life, but still.

Great show, plz don't spoil the end of season 3 or season 4.

Also, this is basically a spaceship/hospital show, but instead of the spaceship (or a hospital) it's a restaurant. Yeah, I've cracked the case.
