The choice of t-55 is probably the weirdest of all the units in terms if time frame. It's a slightly (aka 50s instead of 40s, as it's an updated 54) modernized tank, which the 54 was used in /Korea/ to show how old it is. I don't think there's a single army left in the world that still has a 55. Honestly baffling. Given most of the cheap units date from the 60s or 70s, they should have used a 72.
FWIW the T-55 is still used by a lot of poorer countries around the world that still haven't gotten around to ditching their early Soviet stocks. Angola is still a pretty heavy user of the T-55 and China still has several thousand domestically produced T-55 variants.

Really? It doesn't like it. I must be getting old! :old:

I had my settings so that I would have to approve any comments before they got posted (you know, to keep the jerks and trolls away) and while going through the comments I accidentally hit the remove comment button instead of the approve. They really shouldn't put those two right next to each other.

Anyway, I have changed my settings to just allow all comments now in order to avoid that mistake in the future.

Naw man you need to review cringy videos on Youtube while surfing in CS:GO, that's the only road to success in Youtube 2016.

Whew, I don't know if I'm ready for that level of awesome yet. Baby steps man, baby steps.

Episode 2 of my Shattered Union playthrough is up for anyone who cares.

The problem though with calling them Super Hornets, is that the name itself designates them as carrier fighters. If they converted them for ground based landing gears, they would be just regular Hornets. And the U.S. just has way more Falcons than hornets in general, even including Super (there's only about 500 Super Hornets because you don't need much carrier fighters in the first place). Like on the magnitude of about 1000 to /at least/ 4.5k.
The original 'regular' Hornet was also a carrier aircraft, not a ground-based fighter.* It was also a completely different aircraft from the Super Hornet which was derived from it; it was much more than a simple upgrade.

Not sure what they use the F-35 for in game but it's probably a better choice than the F-22. Sure, the F-22 is hands down a better fighter but that's all that it is. It has extremely limited (almost zero) air-to-ground capabilities, whereas the F-35 was designed from the outset to be 'everything for everyone'. It's intended to take over air superiority roles, ground attack roles, VTOL roles and lots of other positions. Whether or not it is going to be truly great at all of those things (rather than mediocre) is anyone's guess at this point.

But if the game is trying to depict a general use fighter, the F-35 or even F-15D/E would have been a better choice than the F-22. Also, the F-22 was produced in very small numbers and is restricted to essentially border patrol/interception around Alaska as the USAF doesn't want to lose them to accidents in conflicts in the middle east.

*Obviously Naval Air Stations are a thing and the fly their aircraft from the ground but the fact that this happens doesn't make either the Hornet or the Super Hornet ground-based fighters. They were both designed for operations from the deck of a carrier.

I bought Sword of the Stars II for my birthday. What a mistake. I can't make heads or tails of the damn game. They took everything that made SotS I great, stripped it away and replaced it with more complicated and unnecessary new mechanics. I can't even watch the Let's Plays on the game to figure it out because even the LP's are terrible.

In the game, the Super Hornet and the F-35 are used as air superiority fighters. That's why the F-35 was an odd choice over the F-22. Also, the game is set in the year 2014, which makes the case for the F-22 even stronger.

I felt the same way when I first bought it. And while I still think Sword of the Stars is better than it's sequel, Sword of the Stars II is still a pretty solid game. It just takes some effort to figure things out, which is obviously a huge negative for the game; but once you get over that hump you'll have a blast with it. The thing I hate the most about it though is how fleet movement is handled. It just made for unnecessary micromanagement of fleets at the strategic level. And the words 'micromanagement' and 'strategic level' should never be used in the same sentence. I also was disappointed to see Kerberos abandon the idea of Sword of the Stars being a streamlined 4x game that was easy to play but hard to master, and instead make it more of an overly complicated 4x game that just tries to copy its competitors in terms of complexity and "depth".

The role of the JSF in game is to shoot down enemy aircraft. It has 0 attack vs any ground unit. It's purely for air superiority, not for any general purpose. The Raptor just makes so much more sense for the context of the game. Also considering the game was made in 2005, the Raptor was still in production iirc so it's not out of the real of possibility with the changed timeline that more were made, or even are just being made for the civil war itself.

I will concede I was misinformed about the specifics of a Hornet. Still think Falcons works better.

Commodore, I hate to say it but that was a really bad second episode. The drilling in the background was murder to my ears, and I really wanted to quit the video halfway because it really did start to hurt. I also know you wanted to not make 45 minute long videos and I respect that, but you literally stopped the video just as the interesting, conflict part of the battle was going to happen. The whole build up of scouting and pressing south led nowhere and felt pretty unsatisfactory. Also, this is the second time your phone went off recording; maybe you should consider silencing it? I mean if it's a work phone for work then yeah I understand if you couldn't but then why record during work? :dunno:

If the game was made in 2005 (before F-22 production ended or was even hinted at ending) and the role of the fighter is air superiority, then yeah, that was a nonsensical choice.

Having said that, it wouldn't have been a bad choice for a 2016-made game given air superiority is one of the one of the missions of the F-35. They plan on phasing everything else out in favor of the F-35. But who knows when that will happen given production problems or if the F-35 will actually be better at all of the jobs it is supposed to do than the planes it is replacing.

Ok I'll give it another go. It was really the fleet movement aspect that was driving me nuts, I didn't even want to try any of the other mechanics after that.

And as you note, the whole point of SotS I was that it was supposed to take all of the micromanaging out of 4x gameplay. I will admit though that some of the later add-ons to SotS I really upped the complexity and micromanagment of the base game (looking at you trade routes and orbital complexes) but overall it wasn't too much - especially as I had already been playing it years by the time I got the add ons so it wasn't too much at once.

I heard they are making a SotS III - here's hoping it isn't the rush train wreck that II was when it originally released.

What drilling are you talking about? I just watched the video again with my headphones on and didn't really hear anything in the background beyond a little bit of static from the mic. Of course, my hearing isn't what it used to be since my time in the Army, so maybe I'm just not hearing it.

As for the stopping point of the video: Yeah, that was my mistake. I lost track of time due to that phone call and thought I had been recording for longer than I had been. Hopefully you will find episode 3 to be better (which is up right now by the way). I'll try to make sure I get some action into each episode.

As for the phone: Unfortunately, that's going to happen from time to time. Nothing I can do about it. I'm self-employed, so there's never a time when I'm truly off work and I also have a pregnant wife who works and a daughter in day care during the day, so I always have to have my phone on in case I get a call about either one of them.

For the drilling, go to about the five minute mark and turn your volume up. It's definitely there; probably your neighbor doing yard work or something.

I liked this episode far more than the last. I couldn't help but laugh when you were telling the story of the guy on the motorcycle (although I don't know what you mean by a front wheelie; was he trying to lift the back of the motorcycle in the air? If so, you're right, totally deserves to be laughed at :p). Also, the end reminded me how ugly the Florida map is. Water graphics have gone a long way since a decade ago.

Also don't feel bad over the useless foreign aid you got; looks like the Vodnik was equally as useless :^)
