What weapon should I get for self-defense?

Don't they have security where you are?

Yeh I see university and local police occasionally but only during the day. Don't think I've ever seen that at night. The latest I saw one around was 7 in the evening.

Best if the student council/union makes a big stir about it. If the admin/security is lame enough to allow it to happen several times, they need to be fired.

This is the 3rd incident that I know of. They send us crime alerts every now and then by email.

How many people would get rolled if we all skipped high in the air and fluttered our arms out like fairies?

Answer? Probably none.

Is this what people say when they realize that they don't have an argument?

There's no reason why qualified individuals should not be allowed to carry concealed handguns on a college campus. There is not one damn good reason why I should not be able to protect myself with a firearm while I'm at school.

It's asinine. But again, I mean, if I was in the business of rolling people, I'd go to a college campus. Nobody has any guns. Nobody can defend themselves. Nobody can do anything to help anybody out either. So even if a witness sees you, the witness is just as helpless as the victim himself.

And I don't know about other states, but here in New York, campus safety officials do not carry guns. And when policemen enter campus' they have to LOCK their firearms in a safety box inside of their police cruisers.

The policies that have been established are absolutely ridiculous.

It's all true merk, but you really don't have to be a dick about it.

A telephone should be good enough! Just ask the robber to wait as you call the police and they'll come and haul the robber away in 10-15 minutes.

here at college we don't have crime AND don't have guns. :smug:

No crime at all? Whats college without a bit of crime!?

Theres a college here where the a certain pedestrian entrance to student residences is called rape alley. Although I guess most urban areas have a rape alley of their own.

Oh that sounds fun rape ally. Here they have CCTV camera's watching our dorms focused on the doors while meanwhile people get mugged right outside. Its brilliant.

Just shoot the M16 from outside the gates !!!!
Dosent the campus have gates and cameras at least ?

CCTV focused on your doors! Thats crazy. And I thought the smoke alarm in my room was bad...

Well at least that would help figure out that someone was on the premises.
Cameras <> security force however.

There's one in my room too. How does one smoke weed in peace with such annoyances?

This may sound stupid but I'm serious, if you get mace spray yourself with it. When you're trying to take on three people by spraying them, you WILL get it on you.

There is a reason why Police recruits are sprayed with pepper spray.

Yeah it's those minor inconveniences like having to sit at the window to smoke that are going to drive me over the edge and into a murder rampage.

Me personally I'd pickup a big ass bowie or butterfly knife. Either that or a mean pair of brass knuckles. Either one will do some SERIOUS damage.
Completely idiotic. Don't do this. Woody nailed why.
knife will get you in trouble, pepper spray is for sissies
Illegal in some places, I believe. Also, prone to the same issues knives are. Those muggers know these are serious business, and can easily kill if a hit lands in the right spot. The police aren't going to go easy on you just because you're using one of their weapons, either.

There are three very effective self-defense means, in order:
1. Groups
NO one is going to attack a group of young men if they can attack single targets also. They have to be incredibly stupid, even for a criminal, to do that.

2. Mace
Is not for sissies. It's for people that want a proper form of self-defense that isn't going to get them:
A. landed in prison
B. killed for excessive reaction

3. Hit the bench
If you're built, you're less likely to be picked out, since you can inherently offer more and more serious resistance. It's a good thing anyway, so why not?

go to a better campus

as a cs major i stayed up until all obscene hours of the night and traversed campus between midnight to 8 am and never got mugged once.

if you use a knife you're in danger cause if they hit you from behind and take your knife, now you're screwed. and make sure you understand the self defense laws. sadly, certain states are ridiculously hippy and liberal and won't even let a man defend himself. i say that if someone tries to rob you, you should be able to freely blow their stupid head off and then riddle their corpse will bullets afterward. good riddance to bad rubbish.

Recently there have been a series of muggings and robberies on college students in my area. 2-3 guys go and overpower someone beat him over the head and steal his cash and cellphone as he goes back to the dorms. It usually happens around 2-3 am.

Now I can easily see myself in such a situation. I live on campus so buying a gun is out of the question. But pepper spray, or a taser might be an option. What do you think?

These things have been happening earlier and earlier. It's somewhat concerning.

First, anything other than pepper spray, such as knives, blunt objects, and even tasers, are considered weapons that may not be concealed about the person. Depending on locality, short-blade knives of roughly three inches or less are permitted, but may be considered weapons if they can be opened with one hand. Take care not to break the law.

Second, any weapon that you plan to obtain and use for self-defense you ought to train with. You should also learn some basic hand-to-hand combat techniques.

Finally, it would be my suggestion that you would be better protected traveling with others rather than alone. Muggers and thieves look for easy targets and lone individuals, especially women, are not hard to come by. If you travel with at least one other person your chances of becoming a victim are reduced dramatically.

Remember, any weapon you bring to the conflict may be turned against you. Think hard whether or not you are trained, prepared, and willing to use it to defend yourself. Too many people find that they are not and end up being attacked with their own weapon.

Silver, generally speaking there is absolutely no "weapons" I can think of that you can carry on a campus for self-defense and not be breaking the law or rules. But it would depend on the school I guess but I bet your school bans things like tazers and mace. These rules make students easy targets for thuggery but there are ways around them.

You could carry a small pocket knife maybe but that would not be useful for self-defense.

You could carry a moderate to large sized screw driver. It's common and inconspicuous and you can seriously mess someone up with it big time.
