Where is Poland? Poland is in Civ 5.

Actually, far from anachronism, I'm using an even more modern conception of Europe than the dated, 1990s version you're using. People who still think that Europe extends to the Urals, or that Russia is a part of Europe in any meaningful way, are indeed living in the distant past. Europe extends at best to Romania, Moldova, Latvia & Estonia. Even Ukraine and Belarus are only barely part of Europe in the 21st century -- I would personally exclude them from any meaningful understanding of Europe in this day and age. Looking at the modern conception of Europe, it's clear that Poland and Czech Rep are in the Eastern half, while Germany and France are in the West. Scandinavia is obviously Northern Europe while Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece are clearly Southern Europe.

Yes, if you want to continue using an ancient definition of Europe that extends to the Urals, and merely update this raw geography with 1990s borders, then fine, go ahead. But I'm personally going for a more relevant, 21st century approach, which takes Europe to be a meaningful group of like-minded countries, quite aside from the corruption and authoritarianism of Modern Russia. This Europe indeed has PL and CZ in its East, but it's in the East of something meaningful and forward thinking, not backward and fearful like the old 1990s Europe.

I've been skimming through this thread's many pages for a bit now and I can accept your definition. If the European Union(/or better, EU+Schengen Europe) is the definition of Europe we are going with, then Poland is indeed in the eastern half of it.

That however, does not take away the fact that Poland is culturally Central European. Your updated definition doesn't change what culture group Poland is in, and neither does your exclusion of Russia from the European sphere suggest that Russia is no longer in the Eastern European cultural group.

If you want to talk about geography, look at Russia and look at Asia and tell me they aren't the same thing...

You know, Google Maps Street View have updated to include large parts of European Russia, much of which you would consider Asian instead of European.

I would suggest you check that part of Russia out. You'll be surprised to learn that European Russia is in fact European east of the Baltic-Black Sea line you made arbitrarily.

Funny thing is, last time this thread came up, everyone in PL and CZ was at pains to say that Russia was nothing like Poland or Czech Rep, that it was a historically and culturally distinct entity that had nothing to do with the rest of Europe. Now everyone's bleating about how European Russian culture is and how it so obviously belongs with Poland and Czech Republic! Hilarious.

Because Russian culture is foreign to us Central Europeans (hence why to us, the western definition of Eastern Europe is so arbitrary, incorrect, ignorant and confusing), but nobody is going to deny that Russian culture and society is largely based off of European culture and society.

It's a term invented after the Cold War for Eastern European countries to distinguish themselves from Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, and communism.

It's a term that has existed to define the area the modern state of Poland currently rests in for atleast a millenia before the beginning of the cold war.

It's a term that has existed throughout the cold war in all but in the political and economical sense.

It's a term that in post-cold war Europe, accurately and correctly describes the political, social, cultural, geographical and cultural situation and reality for several closely related (culturally, geographically, politically and historically) European states.

Based on internet rage ability in online games or game forums (such as dota, starcraft brood war, counter strike, warcraft III, etc), Poland does place well in Eastern Europe. The rough rage groups are as follows:

Poland/Romania/Bulgaria/Hungary/Ukraine- very angry, and only play as complete arsholes. Whatever are the cheapest trick to do (spawn kill, camping, "cheesing", abusing imbalances in the game as best as they can, lie to people whenever the opportunity comes if they can, report everyone on their team, etc). Frequently cuss you out, "kurwa". Their internet rage generally busts out their native languages and curse in it. They concentrate themselves on their own polish forums, which are probably cesspools of accusing the other polish person to not be able to drink as much vodka as they can.

These ethnic groups also totally lack the ability to understand sarcasm, and they are not just trolling. They are legitimately angry, yet they max out to be about medium-skill in the game. But, they act as if the best players of their Polish/Ukranian communities are the best in the world, despite always being totally defeated by other EU players or China/Korea in respective games where those nations are elite (warcraft III, dota, starcraft, etc etc).

Spain/Italy- might be kind, but bust out very mother-related or sexual-related rage eg "I kill your mother". Seem to usually bust out broken english swears like that. Pretty bizarre behavior. Spain uses their own game forums, but go to international forums as well in broken english. Capable of trolling, but have difficult time understanding sarcasm. Mostly, they just seem to not understand English very well, so they don't communicate much.

Netherlands/Sweden/Norway/Finland: Very kind and when playing with Americans, will speak in English, but also bust out some german or french to communicate with other European players. Very rarely swear or rage (except Sweden), and often are very kind, overbearingly so.

If games get paused, instead of immediately cussing at others and try to unpause the game every second, they will actually wait .5-2 minutes very kindly before even asking "how long?", and then wait for a response instead of immediately try to unpause the game (as would be typical of a US-ian, who either unpauses immediately or unpauses immediately after asking "how long?"). Use report systems honestly for games that have that. They use both international forums and their own forums (particularly sweden, where competitive gaming is quite popular), and understand trolling. They don't troll themselves, but they will post "that's kind of funny :)" instead of long strings of swear words, as the Polish would do. Capable of taking games lighthearted, but also very seriously.

Britain: really indistinguishable from USA-ians in my experience, but I don't play the call of duty/halo games that are plagued by 13 year old USA-ians. I don't know if 13 year old Brits act the same. Obviously, since English is their native tongue, they use the same forums as USA-ians.

Germany: Like Britain, Germany is kind of its own group. They exhibit full range of everything, except their anger is generally more expressed at the end of the game (in English, or in German) rather than constant cussing and being a **** throughout the entire game beginning to end. They take things seriously, whether it's playing the game or trying to be funny themselves. They are self-sufficient in being the host of league-based European competitions (for warcraft III, starcraft, and other individual games. Even online dota, where Tobiwan and joinDOTA is German based)

Russians: Russia really breaks off from Poland/Ukraine in that they are extremely angry and have even more vodka in their bloodstream, but are capable of being funny or actually good at the games they play--the Russian communities are tight knit and have very strong underground scenes, and produced world elite Dota and counterstrike players, with some very good warcraft III and starcraft players. They understand Russian sarcasm (or should I say czarcasm hue hue hue) but do not understand English sarcasm very well; however, they joke around in their native tongue--as opposed to Polacks or Ukranians who are physically incapable of jokes related to competitive games. Russians are much louder than their Polish/Ukranian counter parts, which is pretty hard to do. They are very angry game players, but are actually pretty good.

All other countries are irrelevant, except for a couple french players. But the french community is not distinguishable or notable overall.
