Which country is the most nationalistic?

Totally subjective, based loosely on news, personal experience, and internet comments.

I would vote for USA too. too much flagwaving and hostility about what a true american is. It quickly gets scary when you see them constantly trying to one up each other in the Patriotism race.

Maybe it is because of my european history and my knowledge of what nationalism leads to.

I also listen to classic rock, 60s motown, 80s pop (Katrina and the waves FTW!), and pretty much anything but rap/breakdance/whatevertheheckyoucallit

No hard feelings, Aussies. We're just saving you from being New China. :mischief: You have more in common with us than with them(or at least I imagine)!

Don't know about that , last time we went up against them , the U.S and McCarthy kept running for another 24 hours, while 3RAR held, (admittedly some Canadians stayed too, and the Japs were first stopped at Milne Bay by us too, and Rommel at Tobruk, and our glorious Cavalry charge at Beersheba, The Vc tried the same ambush as the french in Vietnam, after they never tried again. oh wait half of these are conscripts not Special forces. i won't mention the Aussies training the US in tank warfare in WWI, or the Sub that breach the Dardanelles either :mischief: I also won't mention how we saved butts in operation Anaconda in Afghanistan :p... they were SAS

I also won't mention how generally we are proud of not being Nationalistic.

Turkey is an EXTREMELY nationalistic country. I could write a book of what I've seen since I've been here. There has to be a picture of Ataturk in every office. Singers have received death threats and been arrested for singing songs in Kurdish. If you look at facebook pages, many people are fans of the Turkish flag, upload photos of Ataturk, some have pictures of the Grey Wolves (Turkish nationalist group) and there's a campaign against having facebook in Kurdish (which lost). You can be arrested for criticizing Ataturk and Turkish culture. Every school classroom has an Ataturk corner where they have pictures from his life and family. There are also pictures of people like Atilla the Hun who have only a slight connection to Turks but if you believe in Pan-Turkism then they're all Turks. In my experience this isn't just something that the government promotes but is actually strongly accepted by many many people. Many people hate Orhan Pamuk because he made a statement in support of Kurds and Armenians.

America is also very nationalist. At least the government doesn't force it on people. I think a lot of it comes from ignorance. Many Americans talk about how our country is free and that makes us the greatest. They don't realize many other countries are free. America does have more of an extreme of freedom, in many other western countries you can be arrested for hate speech and there are stricter gun control laws. It's a compromise.

When I was in the military, I remember some officers who had just come back some military race in the Netherlands. It included a lot of running I think. What I remember is how they made fun of the American soldiers who take amphetamin or something similar just to be able to finish. They didn't have a very good impression of those soldiers. But they probably weren't special forces though, and it was only a race. Not real war.

edit: Norwegians generally aren't nationalistic(not in the American way at least). I once used a fractal version of the Norwegian flag as a background, and the first person who saw that background looked at me as if I were a neonazi. The thing with not being in the EU, has all to do with money by the way. Many people say it has to do with independence, but I don't believe them. Other than that, our extreme inferiority complex makes us sometime look nationalistic, but we're actually not.

On Turkey being Nationalistic, I'll take a Nationalistic Democracy in a Muslim majority country any day over a Theocracy.

I really hope my color blindness is causing me to read that wrong, Mexico arrogant?

I have a book to recommend you called Psicologia del Mexicano that you should read that could shed some light on the subject for you.

In Mexico, not only do people honestly think it's one of the worse countries on earth (without a doubt the worse using the Latin alphabet) but, at like you are "hot stuff" will last you seconds compared to how long it will in the U.S. .......... Mexicans never like to see anyone get ahead.

Then again I have a feeling most of what you know about Mexico is via American TV and Film *shrug*

The US is obviously the best at tricking it's citizens into loving it.

The USA is the best country in the world. It's the politicians that are in power that trick the citizens into thinking they are in their best interests, and the bipartisan effort by republicans and democrats into convincing the people the Republicans are conservative. Some are, but most are moderates or moderate liberals.

Judging by the internets, Poland.

Nah man, if you went to Poland or a Polonia community in some other country, and really listened what the people are saying about the home country, you would be very surprised. Poles love their country, but we are also very critical and complain a lot about it.

I agree that on average we are fairly nationalistic, but the Americans, Serbs, Russians, etc. are far more nationalistic than us, IMO.

Exactly what I wanted to write.
But not about Poland :)

Between themselves, Russians are critical and often very sarcastic towards their country, but become touchy if critics goes from outside.

Well there certainly are a lot of arrogant Mexican-Americans, to say the least.

Like those ones who claim the West coast is theirs? How the territory is rightfully Mexican and needs to be reclaimed? Never mind the fact they were probably born here and are more American than Mexican, yet consider themselves Mexicans and not Americans? (If Mexico is so great...)

Maybe they just need to grow up a little, however. Young people like to feel specialsauce.

Then you have the people who refuse to actually learn English, but that's not being arrogant so much as an ass. ...unless you start going around demanding to get documents in Spanish, in which case you are arrogant, for having the nerve to demand Spanish documents in an English-speaking country. Also, this is probably not exclusive to Mexicans and is likely applicable to large groups of immigrants - well, no, not even immigrants; some communities are just hesitant to actually adapt - in general.

Mexicans never like to see anyone get ahead.

Hmm.

That explains an awful lot... :mischief:

If I was a conservative, I'd be saying that's the reason Mexico is socialist. ;)

you just proved my point.

Easily North Korea.

How much of that is coercion? Can't fairly judget their nationalism.

Norway.

For our national day we don't have a military parades or any traditional show of force, no, we force our children to dress up in patriotic clothing and march in line in front of the royal family or other local commune leaders. The months before the day every year there are youth squads in red clothing riding in big busses rampaging the whole country.

Elta's observation was directed a Mexicans and not Americans of Mexican decent. But those people you speak of are in fact mostly just angry teens who are in love with the [insert your counter-culture/power movement of choice] most of whom have never spent any time in Old Mexico. Some of it is a result of alienation from racism and negative attitude that many Americans have toward Mexican immigrants.

Mexicans generally have a pessimistic view of their country, government, military and police.

Well aware, I was just saying.

...and in turn, Americans hate them even more. Vicious cycle or what?

Mexicans generally have a pessimistic view of their country, government, military and police.

I would imagine. That's probably part of the reason so many come here(that and the economic opportunities).

Though you know... we could always bring America to them if they ask nicely... :mischief:
