However, I'm certain I will not start CIV5 anywhere near that level.

Lymond, you risk making things a lot harder on yourself. You'll find something that works on rookie level, and then struggle with trying to make it work when you move up.

Based on the following difficulties, my first game (and possibly second and third depending on how the first goes) will be one below normal (warlord), and my following games will likely permanently be on normal (prince):

I'm the type of player who, when I first start a game, I'm pretty good at it (at least, significantly above the average, random person who you could ask to sit down and play a game with you), but then I don't get a whole lot better after that. I've pretty much been playing Noble on Civilization IV the entire time I've had the game. Honestly, though, I prefer it that way. It offers me a challenge every time (granted, I usually have one of the highest scores, but not without effort) and I know the AI isn't being given any bonuses. It's the most even playing field.

Start at the bottom and work my way up. I can learn how the game plays then. And I might be able to win. I will play the game for a long time so I'm in no hurry. I'll play where it is the most fun to me, I don't have anything to prove or be the best. Fun is the name of the game for me.

A bit of info from the manual:
Effects of Difficulty“Prince” is the middle level. On that level neither you nor your AI opponents get any particu-
lar bonuses. On levels below Prince you get bonuses in happiness and maintenance costs,
and you get better results from Ancient Ruins. Barbarians are less aggressive and less smart
on lower levels, as well.
On levels higher than Prince, the AIs receive increasing bonuses in city growth, production,
and technology. They may also get additional starting units and free techs to boot.

Warlord, then move up one level each game, partly to see what the game mechanics are, partly to see all the wonders and unit types, until I loose my first game, stay on that level until I've learned the game.

I said Prince which is the equivallent of Noble on Civ IV. Civ IV was my first Civ game and I started on Settler level and moved up. I think if I would have started on Noble from the beginning, I'd be farther along today in Civ 4.

I think starting at Prince will allow me to learn the game quicker by not relying so much on bonuses.

I'll be trying one below Immortal (Which I think is Emperor in Civ5?). That's hard enough to keep me interested, but still gives me the leeway to explore new strats. I fully intend on losing my first 5 games.

Monarch. Played mostly Monarch/Emp in Civ4 and plan to pick up there for Civ5.

Noble for me; the thing that held me back from going any higher than noble in Civ4 was my abject refusal to bother with the stupid war system. This new one seems entertaining and rich in tactical and strategic options, so I'll start at noble and see where it takes me.

edit: someone said Prince is the new noble and, if that's so, I'll start there.

Seeing how I have to relearn new aspects of playing in the new rendition of Civ, I will probably start at Chieftain.

But after reading some of the posts, I might just do Settler just to get the Steam achievement out of the way....:D

Gonna start at Monarch and see which way I have to go from there.

Chieftain for me, as I want to mess around with a bunch of different aspects of the game at once before trying to compete on equal footing. Getting a good shot at any wonder without having to pre-plan, being able to conduct war without neglecting buildings/science/culture etc. will be great for the educational aspect of the first game or two.

Once I feel like my intellectual curiosity is sated, it'll be Prince for the first competitive game and upwards from there as needed.
