Which major empire was your current area once a part of?

That is the question for this thread. When I'm in North Carolina I'm in land that was once part of the British Empire, and when I'm in Oklahoma I'm in land that was once part of the Spanish Empire. I'm in North Carolina right now so I'll vote for the British Empire.

and for many centuries part of the Holy Roman Empire that is not listed

I forgot, this area was part of the Hellenistic Empire as well. It was part of ancient Persian empires like Sassanids and Achaemenids and also the Safavids at various times. I don't know if the Romans or Byzantines ever got this far south and east. Also the Assyrians and probably Babylonians. So there have been many empires here. I think Ummayyad too probably besides Abbassid.

We've been under Danes and Swedes, neither major empires. Perhaps you could argue that Sweden was one at it height, but that was quite a bit earlier.

If you're adding choices, you should add the Iroquois Confederacy, since at least two people have mentioned it. They controlled a large part of southeast-central Canada and northeastern U.S.
