While We Wait: Writer's Block & Other Lame Excuses

Good to hear that you're still in a... steady state of undeath. Or are you finally doing something about that 'hit by a bus' thing from a few years ago? ;)

Apologies for dropping off the grid again. Educational reforms are evil inspired by Satan and our current schedule in particular had been mailed straight from Hell (fun facts!). Will try to catch up with things soon.

Not to worry. I'm looking forward to the gripping continuation to your Decembrist TL.

10) "World wars" are fought over colonies and their resources, there are clear delineated "Major" colonial powers, and others who are either scrambling to catch up or to establish a niche. 1700-1750. This will focus on rivalry both over somewhat established colonies as well as puppet states. Major and Minor powers ally for niches, cash, balance of powers and prehaps other reasons.
This didn't happen historically, for the most part, so why would it happen ITTL?

I dunno.

Maybe there are reasons I used quotes. Maybe I understand I don't know much more than what AP classes lie to me about. Maybe I'm just offering discussion points.

I freely admit I do not know as much as you and prehaps a majority of the people here. All I want are intriguing ideas for discussion of how, and if, such a TL would work. I also freely admit I would have less than a 50% of running this, even if we establish a somewhat plausible TL. I also admit that them fighting over colonies isn't completely correct, and that the colonies are merely theaters of growing importance might be more acceptable.

The idea behind it is that it would START at OTL 1700-1750. One thing that intrigued me is the French/English rivalry over North America, the Spanish/Portuguese in South America, the Free For All in the Asian Seas. Another was The Diplomatic Revolution and cultivation of alliance systems, the use of colonial systems both as bargaining chips as well as nuclei of stronger empires.

Also, I am still stuck on that time I read that the 1688s-1815 can be considered a "Second Hundred Years War" of rivalry between France and Britain. It just sounds both so cool and so wrong at the same time.

EDIT: Additional Qualifier, I am also seeing niche colonies still available, like IRL New Netherlands, Scandinavian Delaware, ect.

I say, if you want Years of Rice and Salt, just do Years of Rice and Salt, and skip trying to add a veneer of realism.

Am I the only one slighty tickled that two Japans are facing world wide (scope, not inclusive) coalitions in two NESes in the 1920s ongoing at the same time?

Namely, CI and SMW.

Some of the duality between SMW and CI is funny, but also sad. Many situations popping up are comparable; The Ottoman Invasion = The Arabian War, Japanese Pacific War = Japanese Pacific War

In a way, it's interesting to see the similar mindsets going at it in two places. On the other hand, it's sad it's so similar. Wasn't necessarily what I was hoping for.

I'm not enjoying it all that much.

I think that there are two entirely different things going on. I mean, in SMW, I'm attacking Japan and I reckon I'm likely to win, whereas in CI Japan is attacking me. Then in SMW Arabia is trying to expand and other powers are trying to undermine the Ottoman Empire's ally Germany; but in CI the situation is motivated by a landgrab much more than by power politics.

Who doesn't like a Japanese Empire raging across the Pacific?

Japan is mai waifu. :3

I don't know what that means, but I want a Jap empire raging across the Pacific regardless. :3

Japan/Korea OTP.

I now feel dirty for making anything that can be construed as a Hetalia reference, and I don't even watch that show.

Well, in defence of the anti-Japan coalition, in one case some countries decided Japan should be taken down to size and declared war (myself included) and in the other Japan declared war on other people.

So unless Quisani was influenced somehow by the SMW gangbash (unlikely - "Yeah, thats what I really want to happen to my country!") or Spry is so lazy he wants to fight two wars but only write one order set, I can safely say the two are coincidences.

The similarities between the wars in the Middle East are hilariously similar though - they're local wars between a larger Middle-Eastern state and smaller states on the Arab peninsula that started over potential unification and are being egged on by expansionistic European powers in order to use them for colonial expansion. Maybe LoE was inspired by CI, who knows :p

I found a picture of my great great grandfather the other day, and I am wondering as to what time period it is from. Will upload tonight and put on the forums in hopes of someone being able to point out when it was from, as there is no date or anything like that on it at all.

I am back from my very long vacation. Sorry, I left suddenly and without warning. There were some things I had to figure out. I was just checking in and want to return to NESing. It is just been so long since I was last year that I am not even sure where to begin. I am happy to see there are still a lot of familiar names on the forum so I am not a complete stranger.

Welcome Back!

There are a few good NESes running right now: I'd recommend, for example, The Lizard King's Six Month War. :)

Wow! The farrow. :)
