I have a dog that is a black lab/cane corso mix and two cats.

I would not risk my life to save any non-human animal. I'd certainly sacrifice the life of my pet to even prevent what could possibly be a severe injury to a stranger, let alone their death.

If I were that person who needed saving, and the lifesaver had to choose between saving me and his/her pet, I would most definitely prefer they choose me! So, as the saver, I will always choose the person over the pet.

On second thought, I might save the pet. A dog or cat is pretty darn springy- let's imagine we're in a burning building. If all I had to do was clear a beam or something so that the cat or dog could run through, that'd be pretty easy (but might take time to move the beam). Or if the cat or dog was hurt, it wouldn't be too tough to carry (if I only had time to carry the pet). Mr. snuggles the kitty would give me no trouble at all!

But a human gets a bit heavy. Especially the humans nowadays. And plus, if he/she can't save themself, it implies they're hurt. I'm a little skinny weakling- I would struggle carrying such a human! It'd take some darn effort to save the human. And for what! Me to get some lung damage from the smoke?

I might just take mah cute little kitty or puppy or tribble with no problem and live happily ever after
