Who would you save?

I would save my own heir before anyone else.

Sad fact of life, but if one has to die, it will not be my blood.

...

My own daughter obviously. However, since I'm not planning on having kids, I'd probably save the other two kids. I would not rescue the imaginary daughter :p

Anyway, if I did have a daughter, I'd prefer saving family over strangers

Hammer, chisel, and scuba gear

That's absurd. You'd miss and the resulting injuries would lead to fatal infections :shake:

EDIT: Okay, now I'm just being silly. My point was just that being able to swim doesn't keep you from drowning, but several posters seem to think it does. If the OP had talked about your daughter wrecking her car, no one would've replied that their daughter would never have an auto accident since they would've taught her how to drive. Yet the equally nonsensical 'my daughter would never drown since I would've taught her how to swim' statement was given a pass :dubious:

I think saving my own daughter is the more ethical action here. My duties to my offspring, especially if they are underaged, are far greater than those to strangers (the other children in this case). I would have an obligation to help the other two children, though, if my own daughter were not drowning as well.

To make the situation interesting: What if the other two children had been entrusted to your care (for example: they are your neighbour's children and you had promised to look after them when they got into trouble)?

I'd save my hypothetical daughter in this hypothetical situation.

Interesting....has anyone actually said that they would go after the other two kids?

Hypothetically speaking (because I'm a child and don't have a daughter) I would save my daughter.

Yourself- Family- Friends- Americans- American allies- Children- Women- Men-

In that order...

Although yourself and family can be interchangeable. That really depends. If you are a 15 year old girl you should save yourself over say your mother. But if you are a 75 year old grandfather you should save your grandchild over yourself.

The better question is do you save your daughter or do you have save 20 of your friends? Or what if its 100 strangers? Or 10,000 enemies?

New question, same answer. My daughter first. I would probably kill myself afterwards: being responsible for the death of that many people would take a toll on me. But I would always save my daughter first.

It wouldn't help your daughter much to kill yourself, would it?

no doubt, but I'm giving an honest answer here. I don't see how I could go on living after being directly responsible for 1000's of deaths, even in the extreme case where my actions (or lack thereof) would end up saving even more people.

On the other hand, my daugher survived, and she still has a mother.

I think saving your daughter would be expected though. I don't think anyone would say that you had made the "wrong" choice.

I agree with you, but I don't think the opinions of others would be very relevant to me here.

I'm sure different folks, different strokes, and all that.

This reminds me of my 'Tough Decision' thread. You may kill fewer people by abandoning your daughter but your daughter is your responsibility and the others are not.

You would kill yourself over two kids? That's messed up man.
