Why should I pay? I think most things on the internet should be free. Back in my day, everything on the internet was free.

If I were to pay for the site (which I wouldn't), I would expect to have free reign of the site with no moderator action against me no matter what I do. :D

Back in my day there was no internet and you had to walk 5 miles to get pornography or pictures of cats. I don't have a point but I just wanted to point that out.

I was thinking about this and got a bit of an idea on how to raise money without driving people away from the site.

Ever heard of a "swear jar"? It's a jar you put money into each time you swear. Put a system like that in place, but instead of a swear jar you give money to the site, and instead of swearing you buy the right to break a rule on the site that would normally result in an infraction. So for example, if I gave $5, I could use the F word and tell MobBoss to F off or something and for $10 I could post some tits in the babe thread and let's say $1 to respond to a moderator comment in public sarcastically. I don't see how you could go wrong with a system like that!

You would pay ten bucks to post boobies one time?

No. I have paid for a premium forum, and I've been "gifted" free premium membership to forums. The experiences convinced me never to pay for content on the web.

If a site this large, with this many members and hits, can't figure out how to pay the bills, it should, and will, go out of business. The content is user-generated, children: without the members there IS no content. Our contribution is the content.

That's just one example. The limits are only as limited as the rules the moderators impose upon us and last time I checked there's like 20 pages of rules.

I would be willing to pay, but the moderators would no longer "own" the site. The paying members would have to be given more say. Threads could no longer be arbitrarily closed down just because a moderator doesn't like what's being presented. It would require a change of rules.

I would prefer this remain a free site. A pay-site would probably result in a migration.

Well back in my day when we wanted porn from the local house of ill-repute we had to walk 15 miles in the snow to get there.

Nope. This isn't the only place on the Internet that I frequent.

This is a good idea.

Having to pay for OT would mean I would not, having crystallised the issue of how much value is to be obtained by browsing this forum.

I'm thinking signal to noise ratio here: sure, there are nuggets; just how much panning is worthwhile?

I'd pay an annual subscription...

Yeah, in my experience, this is where paying-for-forums breaks down. I'd also be willing to pay an annual subscription, since I'm here so much (~10 bucks a year)...but then I would expect to be treated like a paying customer, and I'd want some perks (never see ads, get better mod feedback, etc).

Unwilling and unable.
:goodjob: That sums my thoughts up.

I'm sorry, but I'm just not going to pay for something that you can get for free elsewhere. I might eventually volunteer to donate some money, but I'm just not going to pay for what should be free content. No bonus, no money. (I don't consider being able to use the site a bonus.)

No. On principle. I mean, sure, there's a monetary value I'd place on the enjoyment I get from this site, but being forced to pay that in order to gain that enjoyment would lower it to $0.

Plus, how much enjoyment could be generated by the remaining 10 members?

I love this site, I certainly would

No. In fact it is time the posters must rise up and seize the means of moderation!

Fight and you may die. Run and you
will live at least awhile. And dying in your bed many years from now,
would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for
one chance, just one cahnce, to come back here as young men and tell
our enemies that they may take our lives but they will never take
our freedom!"

No, I wouldn't. If I'm going to have to pay to hang around here, I might as well migrate to Something Awful and get a semi-decent product for my money.

I suppose it would have the dubious advantage that teenagers couldn't post until they're adults.
