Aight, I think we all agree that the popups not are a problem, as they can be blocked.
So the only thing we get rid of (effectively) is the banners.
I must say, I do not find the banners very offensive, maybe even informative from time to time.
I rarely click on a banner, once every two months perhaps, but when I do i am intrigued by what it has to offer, off course.
I think we are all very capable internet surfers and, hence, capable of not being annoyed by a few banners.

I had the same problem, but I switched to Mozilla and, swoosh, no more "connection to yada.yada.com was refused".
