Bolshives and Anarchists were the bogeymen then, It's why those Socialist parties were toothless and weak (and there was no longer any organized Anarchist body) by the time of the Great Depression, the Socialists had their heyday in the Gilded Age. The Second Red Scare and McCarthyism just made them completely irrelevant and pawns of the FBI. Stalin kicking the bucket didn't help and the shift to Social Democracy just got more and more detached from Socialism in three stages: 1880-1920, 1920-1953, and 1953 until now. Those eras were cusped by the Commune, the October Revolution, and then the Death of Stalin.

Love it or leave it was not an anti-war message and I've heard it enough from people of the same race to know its not about race but "patriotism" and the tendency in people to equate what they want with all thats good and what opponents want as bad. Its my way or the highway is not a racist sentiment.
