It’s hard to play counterfactual with what Woodward knew and when he knew it. If he published it in February, would there be a denial? Would the administration have changed policy? If the federal government took drastic measures, how would local governments or political opposition react? I’d be wary of tying the question of journalistic ethics to the potential outcomes had Woodward published shortly after said interview.
Anyway, I’m just kind of tired of President Trump. Not so much his pre-coronavirus policies (the coronavirus, I’m not going to talk about here because it’ll get way off my point) but rather the constant intrigue that surrounds the man and his inner circle; the leaks, the denials, the tweeting, the anger directed towards him and the total collapse of anything approaching rational discussion of policy rather than the personal animosity of which so much complaining seems to stem.
I’ll grant that all U.S. Presidents are subject to this in one way or another; Clinton with the philandering, Bush with the neoconservatives, Obama and his tan suit or red lines or Libya or whatever. But now, I feel like it is getting totally out of control. I think both parties are responsible for this because the Democrats, as much as they say they don’t play dirty like the Republicans, they feed into it just as much and they think they can pee in the pool too so long as it’s clear.
I don’t like political dynasties, and I’m probably going to skip mailing a ballot this year (again!) but geez, if I did vote I think I might write in David Eisenhower (President Eisenhower’s grandson.) He’s married to a Nixon, so it’s like voting for the whole fifties again!
