A New Dawn Bug Reports and Feedback

Feedback: The Axeman graphic is really far off the tile, or maybe it's just the Barbarian Axeman, but anyways it's got like one shoe one the tile and the guy is pretty much still on the last tile whence he came from, i'd show a pic, but i've used too much memory to save a Print Screen without maybe closing the game... ;)

Seems while vanilla centered the single unit graphics (or at least that's what I remember), the Formations version doesn't :(

While it's minor to me as a gameplay factor, it - is - quite annoying to misjudge which units are on which tile.

Hindu Missionary National Limit had been corrected for 1.75.

If you're not afraid of messing around with XML, go to Rise of Mankind/Assets/Modules/Afforess/Better_RoM/ and open up with Notepad or better yet Notepad++ Civ4UnitClassInfos.xml there. Then go to Hindu Missionary's XML entry and change Max Total per Player from 3 to -1.

Thanks for the tip, but it's not my primary religion in my game atm.

Was just reporting a bug :).

Can't wait for 1.75, this mod already owns my soul.

Feedback: Um, that reminds me, they're really not called "Yogis", they're called "Brahmins"[sic]. Brahmin in the Vedic period actually meant one who has realized Brahman. However, later on Brahmin came to be identified with the highest of the four castes, the Brahmins, who by virtue of their "purity" and priesthood were held proprietors of rituals.
Yogis are anyone of any cast whose teachings are completely individual interpretations and are most often unorthodox. For example, Jesus of Nazareth was to Jewish priests what yogis are to Hindu priests. Yogis tend to be devoted to their own Spirituality or Realization rather than any Religion, they have been known to have devote followers and sometimes even start very large sects, for example Shri Sai Baba has an estimated 1 million+ followers today.
Spoiler :
Wiki:
A brāhmaņa (ब्राह्मण) (masculine, pronounced [ˈbraːhməɳə]), (which literally means "pertaining to prayer") is a prose commentary on the Vedic mantras—an integral part of the Vedic literature.
A brāhmaņa (ब्राह्मण) (masculine, same pronunciation as above), means priest; in this usage the word is usually rendered in English as "Brahmin". This usage is also found in the Atharva Veda. In neuter plural form, Brahmāņi. See Vedic priest.

Axeman Update: I'm using single-unit graphics; and yes archers are a tad off center if i have more than one on the tile, however, not as blatantly bad as an axeman shows...need a pic, i'll try to get one.

Bug?: A city expanded and connected to a pre-built Stone Quarry/Roaded resource, every city connected to it or the City got to build a Stone Maker's Workshop (something like that) in their build queue (the one that supersedes the yet to built Stone Maker's Hut). The connected city got both the Hut and the Workshop (again i may have the exact names wrong) in its build queue, um, interesting, is having both intentional? Just how large is "in the vicinity of ..."?

BTW, i think something is hosed with nVidia's newest video driver, or something in the game is trying to do a low-level no-no, i'm getting hardware like issues, so i bought a new (same brand model) video card but with 1GB VRAM to test those issues.
Does any one else get missing layers/colors (darkness or darker layers) and missing or visible vectors etc. in the later game with nVidia's new drivers?

It means workable range not cultural range. Basically if you can select the tile to be worked by a city then it is in the vicinity. It does not have to be worked and it may be being currently worked by another city.

Not sure if this is known or not, but I'm having a number of units change their appearance when they move around or possibly when they are in groups. I only noticed it after I turned everything to the lowest settings, including single unit graphics. It seems like the custom appearances for ethnic units or whatever goes away sometimes.
Anyway, here's a screenshot of the AI making too many missionaries. I know this has already been brought to light, but I thought I might as well upload it.
The other screenshot is a somewhat silly usage by the AI of warlords and a crusader to guard island cities. They are the only units on their respective tiles, except that the crusader has a trebuchet for good measure.

Not sure if this is known or not, but I'm having a number of units change their appearance when they move around or possibly when they are in groups.

Perhaps related, I vaguely remember noticing that cave lions had grayish skin/fur while standing, but light brown skin/fur when moving/attacking.

I also see sometimes units displayed in shades of bright purple instead of a texture, but that may be due to memory issues.

I think the problem you two described may have been caused by the acitivated 'frozen animations' option. I, too, have different graphics for animals and flavoured units, sometimes pink as well - but that alleviated a bit.

Bugs?: I cannot nicely change resolution in ESC>Options>Graphics, i really think something is has crept in as a low-level or driver related issue. I tried to switch in-game and it borked everything, in one case i waited out the Yes/No? pop-up and it kept the setting(!), i hate leaving the game because, you guessed it, after A.D. the savegames may not load again, at 2MB+ it's not likely to load again. =(

Bug?: I was playing the Carths and i could not pick a state religion at all, most of my cities had built Hindu structures, but i could not go in and switch to any of the religions including Hindu, it said i had no state religion.

Feedback: Okay, i know i said somethings about Jungle Camps being 1-2 Foods too many, but i also think Mountains are 1-2 hammers too many. It's so much bounty that i feel like i'm cheating, the AI has it hard enough!

Bug?: An AI asked for a Free Trade Agreement, i negotiated and asked if the same trade was acceptable, it said yes and we parted. I got this message several times in succession after that: Tradeutil - unknown tradetype
(sp?).

Bug?: I have the archer retaliation setting(?) on and if i attack a city, for example, and i bombard from my stack of mixed units, then one-by-one choose units to attack melee, at some point about unit 4, my whole stack of archers obliterates the city - even though i did not choose them to attack AND they have no MP left after Bombarding... I think the AI somehow triggers the 'retaliation' and then that triggers their archer 'retaliation' and that continues until all archers or all units on one side die, maybe this is a known feature, but again it ends the fighting quick and somehow i feel i cheated, did i(?), what's up with that?

Bug?: I built the 15 Trimarans (sp?) (largest fleet of war ships) Quest and when i choose to get gold bonuses for my ports i did not see any changes at all, i had like 8 port cities and my income did not move up or down.

?:What happened to the toroid setting? it's gone, and some other settings are unchangeable on the Custom Game screen.

Just like the game resolution, BUG does not handle changes in its options very well mid-game, i would not be surprised if the 'unofficial" patch or BUG/BULL/BUFFY/BAT is having its own issues, imho, which is noob level i'm sure. ;)

PS I'm sorry my stuff getting vague and error prone, but usually i can run the game and the browser at the same time and get what i'm saying correct, and even do Print Screens, but these games are so big i have to recall from past memory hours later when it finally crashes.

Not sure what you mean by "borked everything". I remember I once had the screen showing just randomly colored pixels all over, but alt-tabbing out of Civ and then back to it solved the problem. I ran into a "not enough video memory" crash shortly after though.I have no problems changing the resolution, so I guess the problem you describe is a symptom of an overtaxed machine rather than a bug. The fact that you can't even make screenshots anymore supports this analysis imho.

I was surprised too when I saw how many hammers the mountains give, but the AI does make use of them too, so they don't give the player an advantage. The hammer costs of many buildings (especially wonders) are so high that the hammer yield of the mountains is justified imho. The feature provides an incentve to settle near mountain ranges (which were pretty useless before), and it's an interesting task to provide a city with enough food so that it can actually work the mountains.

Which options specifically? Personally I've found BUG to be remarkably solid and well-maintained, and never noticed any problems when changing options mid-game. Nevertheless it's possible that there are bugs in BUG, but then a more precise description would be helpful, because we could send it to the BUG team.

I'd assume that all bug reports are welcome, however you are making things difficult to analyze, because you seem to be overtaxing your machine so much that it's hard to tell whether you found actual bugs or just experienced a system fluke. Personally, if I were Afforess, I would probably file such reports under "probably a fluke" until someone with a less overtaxed system reports them too. I obviously can't really speak for Afforess though. :)

What I wonder is why you keep playing huge games "until they crash" instead of playing smaller games that you can actually finish on your machine. Is this really more enjoyable? This is not a criticism (we all enjoy Civ in our own individual ways), I'm just wondering. :)

Bug?: Units set to in-borders patrolling auto-promote even when i set the setting to not do that. BTW, i love all the promotions, very nice.

@Psyringe: Sorry, borked means in this context that the resolution was changed not only for the game, but also for the desktop when exiting the game, which is just bad programming. Now, what i mean also is that trying to change he game resolution in-game mad a mess of the game's layout, while my native resolution is 1920x1600, and for example i change to 1440x900 (keeping 1.6) the game window would be larger like a virtual desktop, and parts of the UI would be in the wrong places, needs a screen shot, i know.

Regarding Print Screen, i guess i could reserve less memory for the game to get that to work, it's a memory issue, allocation specifically, M$ OS does not have enough memory to do a Print Screen.

True, the AI gets to use those same high yields as i do, i just cannot imagine what all those hammers represent, as Mountains are not high yield without a resource in them or the technology to get to those resources, like explosives. I seemed to have no problem building Wonders before i realized all those hammers sitting there, i was thinking that when i reached mountaineering or some modern tech that they'd be used then, i was surprised to see them used on turn one and without a mine give more than Hills! ;)

In this thread i've posted several BUG bugs having to with changes that bork a game fast, just search for me in this thread to see them. Most have screen shots too.

My poor machine, LoL. Actually, you might say i am taxing WinXP x32 by running the 3GB flag, but i would not say so. The hardware's quite modern, and robust, it's just that this mod is quite taxing on most x32 systems, the crashing is completely the mods own issues, not the hardware at all, and you'll see some good improvements to AND really soon i bet. However, i won't say it's not M$'s OS issues too, but that's another thread. To me a small game does not 'feel' like a Civ game, i have a small Civ game i like very much, it's called C-Evo.

Hello

Just upgraded to rom 2.92 and AND 1.74. Suddenly mines remove forests again. Removing forests with mines don't require any techs. Is this a bug or a feature? Can it be fixed manually (without waiting for patches). I have the 1.74h patch. Is it fixed in xml or python?

Thanks! Hope it is the right thread.

@Gudal, i think early on that the forest is burned down to place a mine on it, not chopped down like with later techs. A lot of improvements remove previous tile improvements, right?

Yes. You can chop(burn) forest/jungle from start but it doesn't give hammers until chopping techs(Bronze Working/Iron Working) and many improvements now remove forest/jungle.

Yes, I've seen them and I'm sure they are appreciated. I didn't want to diminish your contributions by any means, far from that. So if that's how my comments came across, please accept my apologies. I just wanted to remark that bugs are usually easier to attribute when it's clear that the system wasn't overtaxed already.

I wasn't necessarily talking about your hardware. While I regard it as possible that your hardware is overtaxed (but obviously can't tell without knowing your specs), I think it's equally possibly that you're overtaxing your OS architecture by testing the limits of x32 Windows.

For example, if you have a modern video card, then it's possible that (by using the 3GB switch) you're now giving the graphics drivers less address space than they need. I had this on my own machine. With the 3GB switch I got graphical flukes, I had to finetune the settings with the /userva switch to make it work correctly. That was years ago though when AND didn't even exist, so in my case it definitely wasn't a problem of this mod specifically. So in the case of the graphics problems, if you can rule out hardware overtaxing as a potential cause of the issue, I'd recommend trying to finetune the address space allocations next.

I understand completely. I currently play with 5-10 minute inter-turn times - I could have a much faster game if I played on smaller maps with fewer opponents, but for me, the game unfolds it's real beauty on giant maps with 30+ civilizations, when there's still stuff to explore and discover even in the mid-game, and when there are dangerous rivals and enemies even in the late game. :)

Bug?: I built the 15 Trimarans (sp?) (largest fleet of war ships) Quest and when i choose to get gold bonuses for my ports i did not see any changes at all, i had like 8 port cities and my income did not move up or down.

I can answer this one!

If the icon bonus in question is the gold coin :commerce:, which I know because I just completed this quest yesterday, then that doesn't give you insta-gold bonuses. The coin stands for Commerce, which doesn't give you gold, but gives you extra :science::espionage::food::culture: and such. The newest versions of AND show you the actual bonuses you get.

Bug?: I was playing the Carths and i could not pick a state religion at all, most of my cities had built Hindu structures, but i could not go in and switch to any of the religions including Hindu, it said i had no state religion.

Where you running a civic that blocks adopting a religion - like Secular, Atheist, or Folklore?

Feedback: Okay, i know i said somethings about Jungle Camps being 1-2 Foods too many, but i also think Mountains are 1-2 hammers too many. It's so much bounty that i feel like i'm cheating, the AI has it hard enough!

Mountains only give 3 hammers, and cost you 3 food to work - they are balanced.

Bug?: An AI asked for a Free Trade Agreement, i negotiated and asked if the same trade was acceptable, it said yes and we parted. I got this message several times in succession after that: Tradeutil - unknown tradetype
(sp?).

Thanks - will fix.

Did you have stack attack on? You just described what stack attack does.

Will look into.

?:What happened to the toroid setting? it's gone, and some other settings are unchangeable on the Custom Game screen.

It depends on the mapscript - some mapmakers disabled certain settings.

Just like the game resolution, BUG does not handle changes in its options very well mid-game, i would not be surprised if the 'unofficial" patch or BUG/BULL/BUFFY/BAT is having its own issues, imho, which is noob level i'm sure. ;)

Which changes? It's meant to work in-game.

Really? I'll look at it then.
