Altered Maps ΙΓ: To make a map larger than what it maps.

That map has me puzzled.

I can see that mountainous regions and regions further north are going to take longer to warm up, but why don't desert regions simply continue to warm up as the year progresses, too?

I suppose there must be a maximum, where as much heat is being reflected back into space as is reaching the surface.

Why does that remember me of the other map with all the new Arab 'stan's which we already discussed?

Because they're on the same theme and topic?

Also because it essentially draws up the same new borders and uses the very same names.

But why "-stan" of all things? Is this some sort of enlightened ignorance?

"Oh, all they're Johnny Foreigners who hate Westerners anyway, so let's invent a few authentic hilarious names for their potential countries."

It beats A-zone and B-zone that's for sure.

And there are quite a number of "-stans" about the place. Though I suppose you're right: it's not really appropriate for the Middle East. Except for Kurdistan.

What would you suggest instead?

English word "state" translates to Polish as "stan" (or as "państwo" / "kraj", when it refers to countries).

So we for example say Stany Zjednoczone Ameryki (the USA). Stan Teksas (the state of Texas).

In other Indo-European languages "stan" probably also means state or country or land.

So we have Afghanistan and Kurdistan. Countries of Afghans and Kurds.

Though I suppose you're right: it's not really appropriate for the Middle East.

It is indeed not appropriate for Arab-speaking regions because Arab is not an Indo-European language.

So these are areas where "stan" is not appropriate (dark green):

hilarious names for their potential countries

What is hilarious in word "stan" ??? Well, if you want, call them Kurdistate, Afghanistate, etc. The same meaning.

But Arab is a Semitic language (not an Indo-European language), so indeed Arabs don't have such a word like "stan".

It is therefore Anti-Semitic to call Arab countries "Shiitistan" or "Sunnitistan".

I think the -stan ending is Persian.
