The borders are very rough.

If purple is Byzantine (and purple should always be Byzantine :yup: ) it looks strange. Not only due to to lacking... Constantinople, but also lacking Morea. I mean, Constantinople and Morea were the last byzantine lands.

A true Roman would just call it ‘the city’.

Given that "poly" is often used to mean "polytechnic (college)", I'll stick with Konstantinoupolis if I'm trying to sound erudite. :)

Poli with an ēta, meaning city. Even the Tourks use it as a name for it.

Tourks :shake:

Well, yes, the saner/most likely account is indeed the "To the City" (Eis tin Polin) getting corrupted to the tourkish false-name for it :D

What can one expect when they also claim that the term "Anatolia" is actually turkish, and means mother something.

Much like the poet Omar wrote about Memnon the Aga.

I know what it means. It just doesn't sound very impressive in English. :mischief:

The City of World's Desire, the Queen of Cities, the seat of Constantine and Justinian and the setting of the Alexiad. Those are impressive. "The City" is not. :p

The City invokes a unique oneness, because when you say ''The City'', people just know what you're talking about, so it sets Constantinople above all other cities in greatness

The City is obviously the City of London though. If you say it in Greek its another thing entirely.

Helsinki? I have been there in the past. It is a rather small town, though. I mean, Constantinople had more than 1 million people when it was first being referred to as The City, which for the time was very impressive ;)

All the entrants to this year's U.S. Open Cup (Soccer tournament)

Any pro or semi-pro team can enter, I think. So you get teams from various leagues in the tournament, as well as the potential for crazy upsets, much like in England's FA Cup. Except the FA cup has 400-600 teams in it? This is a lot smaller, but it's growing every year..
