Inspired by the songs "Oklahoma!", "Sweet Home Alabama", and "California Gurls" (and the numerous imitations thereof), I decided to map out US states by the number and emphasis of syllables in their names. Thus a state name in a song title can be switched for a different state of the same color. 2 notes:

1. I went with the standard pronunciation of Louisiana, rather than the one I use (which is more like "Looziana", and would thus be orange).
2. I went with "Columbia", even if no one will ever refer to it as "Columbia" in a song, instead of "DC" (which would be light blue).

Washington D.C. is 4 syllables?

EDIT - ok, I see, Columbia.

Now, you could go with "District of Columbia", or "Washington District of Columbia". :p

It turns out there's a bunch of states with variable pronunciation - I have a friend who told me that people who are from Illinois stress the last syllable. But I am not actually skilled enough to do two-colored stripes, so I can only make any given state one color.

some US states, particulary in the west, is devoid of any natural borders. it looks ugly... if a state bordered on the colorado river, that would look much better.

Thats because they are huge compared to the east and just cut states into rectangular shapes to make it easier I assume.
But my state has a non square border with Montana :D. Probably because the Bitteroot mountains are there..

Btw heres an interesting map;

Every state except Oklahoma has a blue county.

Conversely, every state has a Red County, except Hawaii, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

Why are North Dakota, Montana, and Georgia blue?

Why are North Dakota, Montana, and Georgia blue?

And Missouri, why is it Blue?

For that matter, you could also add Alberta to Jesusland.

I'm sort of amazed how blue northern Iowa is. I drove through it recently and every other house had an Anti-Abortion sign with the best one reading:
"A nation that kills its children is without hope."
Didn't God sanction the killing of children if they didrespected you so some other wierd stuff like that?

More to the point didn't God kill the first born son of every Egyptian family at some point during the plagues? Sounds like if anything God is in favour of abortion :p

No, God is opposed to abortion, he's just not opposed to killing people after they've been born. ;)

That wasn't for abortion...
That event is called the Passover and I'm sure Jews celebrate that day...
And there was a very good reason for it...
