Not for college. A lot of star baseball players never went to college. Basketball and football are the two biggest sports for generating pro talent.

In the U.S. the 2nd level of their "American football pyramid" is college football. Not that you can really call it a pyramid - but if you want to try to compare it to the English football pyramid, college football is right below the NFL. (I don't actually follow American football - so if I am totally wrong about that, somebody better correct me)
Either way though, it's where the youth development happens for players and like in the English championship, managing/coaching is a high-profile job. So it pays a lot. It's weird, but that's just how things are set up, for whatever historical reason. I guess it's also probably worth mentioning that it brings in a lot of money.

It's just that it's public money. Americans spend a lot of time whining about the size of the public sector and waste and then I see that they reward in splendor an entertainment position rather than something purposeful for the poor.
Sure, it brings in a lot of money. It also brings in a lot of money to balance atrocities of poverty.

If nothing else, the map has encouraged me to go on a google quest to find the info behind the asterisks over Pennsylvania and Mississippi.
The results were a lot less exciting than I hoped they would be.
What I did find, to allay Angst's concern, is that though they are highest paid public employees, most of that money they receive is not public money, rather it's money skimmed off from private sponsorships and other revenue that the teams they coach generate privately (or so I am led to understand)
It's still a colossal waste of money, but at least is not public money (mostly)
...Or I could have completely misunderstood the situation entirely, speaking, as I am, largely from a position of ignorance

When I was in Poland back in 2004, it seemed like a lot of young adults were still living with their parents (or other family members), mainly because there weren't that many jobs out there that could provide you with enough income to get a place of your own. There is also a bit of a cultural tradition in some countries for kids to stay with their families until their married..
Now, I think in Poland, there is still a lot of that traditional "Stay with your parents until you meet someone and/or get a good job" reasoning going on, but I think if the economy improved, that you would see a lot of people just move out.. There seems to be a bit of a contrast between say Poland and Italy, in that a lot of Polish parents would want to force their kids to move out when they turn 18 - if it were possible... but that likely varies from household to household.
But yeah, in one house we stayed at for a while during our trip, you'd have an entire family (parents, 2 kids, 19 and 21), plus an uncle and I think an aunt as well. There was also a network cable running to the neighbours house, so that the 2 households could share the internet bill. There was just a lot of communal stuff happening, mostly for economic reasons, but also because tradition.
So what am I saying? I think that in Poland's case at least, pragmatism would take over if the economic situation was better for younger people, and you'd see that 44.4% drop quite a bit and not remain as high as in the case of Italy for example. My best friend is Italian and he wasn't even born there.. but his parents insist on all their kids living with them until they marry.

Over here, the minimum wage is just enough for you to pay for rent (in a really crappy place). And by that i mean it takes the entire minimum wage just to cover the rent with no money left for utilities & food.
Most of the available places for rent are owned by rich people who can ask for huge rents and don't care if a place is unoccupied for years. The people i know who have a place of their own either have rich parents / inherited it from their parents / got a decent salary and a 30-40 year debt to the bank for the purchase.
