If you'd said sovereign states at the start, then maybe I wouldn't have suggested Wales and Scotland. Though I think the Isle of Man is a sovereign state. If you mean somewhere that's self-governing, that is.

It was always sovereign states we were talking about.

And I wouldn't call those places countries.
 
By which I meant state.
I use "State" and "Nation" pretty precise, but I'm not that strict about "Country".
 
I would think of Wales and such as nations rather than countries, but looking up the wikipedia pages for "nation" and "country" it seems both have varying and fuzzy definitions.
