Ask a Furry

Well we might as well get the obvious question out of the way.

Why are you a furry ?

EDIT: also how do you get along with other freaks (like anime fans, people who like caulieflowers etc)

Well we might as well get the obvious question out of the way.

Why are you a freakfurry ?

Getting rid of the insults and making it a polite question, I am a furry because:

a) I grew up with many anthro characters
b) I am interested in many anthro characters
c) Pretty much all my favorite characters.. no.. wait... ALL of my favorite characters(Sonic, Shadow, Scourge, Kazma, Kogenta, etc.) are anthro.
d) I participate to some extent in the furry community: I listen to their flagship comedian, I draw almost entirely furries, I register at some of their sites, etc.
e) I self-identify as one, which I feel is fairly important.

This all can be seen in the opening post, however.

EDIT: also how do you get along with other freaks (like anime fans, people who like caulieflowers etc)

I get along with anime fans kind of well, being a bit of one myself(my favorite anime is in fact half-furry, not having been dubbed into English unfortunately). I do kind of dislike the extreme otaku types however, simply because of how wannabe-Japanese and such they tend to be. Nothing wrong with liking anime itself however.

I do draw partially in the anime style, too, so I can't really be critical of anime to begin with.

Why do you consider furryism as being such an identity and as "my people" in almost the same way as blacks or ethnic minorities....
Furries are people who make a certain choice about sexuality, and then decideto publicise and make it open, and worry why they are maligned....

I have seen few other sexual fetishes where people openly on the internet say "welp, I'm into watersports, love that piss running down my facve, one day, my brothers, WE SHALL REACH THE MOUNTAINTOP, AND WE AS A PEOPLE WILL BE FREE" and so on, the same way furries do.

Why do you consider furryism as being such an identity and as "my people" in almost the same way as blacks or ethnic minorities....

It is an identity, actually, at least in my thoughts. We have:

a. well, self-identified ourselves. That's a pretty good start at having an identity.
b. developed our own slang/dialect
c. set up various sites for ourselves
d. organised meetups and conventions like any other group or community
e. we've even set up real-life "neighborhoods", just like gays and such.

Granted, it's a very loose identity, but it's about as valid as a nationality in an ethnically diverse nation; you really won't have much in common with your countrymen besides a few things.

Furries are people who make a certain choice about sexuality,

Being a furry isn't about sex per se. There are many sexualised furries, but not all furries are sexual. If that was the case, there'd be no tame furry art. As I've said, the oddest or most bizarre things stick out the most, hence the stereotypes about perversion and fursuiting.

and then decide to publicise and make it open, and worry why they are maligned....

Well I can support that, being a believer in personal responsibility. When you reveal your identity, you more or less say you are willing to accept the consequences. Just like when you reveal you're gay in the military or just to a group in general. If you're kicked out/beat up, you did invite such a thing by revealing it.

Not to excuse discriminatory or violent behavior(the people who engage in the violence should be tried), of course. But by revealing that you are x, believe in x, practice x, etc. you understand that people might attack you for your relation to x.

Ideally, we'd all be tolerant of eachother, but what can you do?

Do you regret starting this thread?

No, not at all. :) I'm ignoring the blatantly rude comments; I'll let the mods sort that out if they so wish. It certainly has been nice to help answer honest questions some people have.

Many homosexuals say they would be happier if they weren't gay. Do you think you'd be happier if you weren't a furry?

I think one can stop being a furry(or at least withdraw from the community) and keep their furry actions to a minimum, so I wouldn't say the situations are entirely comparable. Homosexuality, by contrast, can't really be "stopped", as it will always nag at your subconscious, and impacts your life enormously, by merit of your sexual relations, the many legal issues involved, and pretty much your lifestyle.

However, no. I am proud of being furry as it gives me a little something that helps me stick out. :)

The trolls just motivated me to get the courage to stop being frightened

I have to say, I have to admire your courage. I myself have taken a lot of flak and flames and trolls (not to mention rolling eyes and Picard facepalms) for liking a certan character (y'all know who :p). So I can pretty much sympathize with the furry fandom.

I've noticed. Quite a lot of people make unnecessary references to Samus when discussing an unrelated topic with you(to give an idea of how much I've seen, I know that one of your most-often invoked pet peeves is when you're called civg and not CivG ;) ). I think it's in the same arena as people who say someone loses an argument simply because they made a typo or two. It's an argument of last resort when you have no real leg to stand on... just insulting what one likes rather than a mistake or two someone makes.

But I understand perfectly though. I'm obsessed with Shadow...

...and Sonic...

...And Scourge...

...And King Kazma...

...And Kogenta...

...and... *Whacked*

...I'm obsessed with a lot of characters, in a nutshell, so I understand how you feel! :goodjob: My issue is most people like yourself can narrow their fandom down to one or two people... I don't have that talent. ^^; ...hence the polymorphic avatar.

This has been a valuable experience for me in not being too afraid of the moderators nonetheless(or rather, not fearing talking to them about an issue; I always was the teacher's pet and never broke the rules back when I was in normal school). While it was mostly just a bunch of trolls, it did remind me that there probably are non-trolls who share the same misconceptions about the furry fandom. So I felt that rather than waste time - and spam the forums - by responding to the trolls, I should ask the mods to open a thread about the subject.

And voila, here it is. I hate to come off as some "missionary" type figure, but I'll restate it for anyone who's confused: this thread is in response to the general lack of knowledge about furries, not the people who just troll them. Forget about the latter group; I'm here to answer the questions of the former group. :)

/Wall of text. I'll get back to answering questions whenever they come in...

I don't know if I'll be able to answer anything.

You might not be able to answer questions about the fandom itself(like the furry celebrities and such), but you can certainly answer questions about why you yourself are a furry and such, etc.

You don't have to be an Einstein on all that is furry to help chime in. :)

Please C_H, the more the merryer .

If the Furrys were mainstream in the nineteen thirties all the way to the last great war of WW2, would Hitler graciously accept you guys as one of the many vanguard of the Arayan Race? Or would he automatically seek annihilation of your kind, or sentence all of you to a life of entertaining the Third Reich's children and their children's children? Is there any Neo-Nazi Furrys?

Chewbacca isn't an anthropomorphic animal, but he is quite furry. Is Chewie prominent in your fandom?

Link to video.

I think you can only classify him as an extraterrestrial humanoid. Not an anthropromorphic animal here on Earth. Star Wars fanboys can only claim him. Unless he Taniciusfox tells us otherwise.
