Because Persia comes from the time of Jahiliyyah, the time of ignorance before Islam that Muslims like to pretend doesn't exist. Ironic, really, because they still do things like circumcizing women and celebrating Nowruz, both of which come from that terrible time before AH 1.

You mean the Shah? No, in America it's ANY king. There are some people here who still mock King George III "the Insane", and anyone else who takes the name "King". (Only Elvis Presley gets to call himself "The King", but that's a different kind of king . Everyone else is a pretender and deserves no respect. ) And they deserve a good mocking if they lead a country, especially if they lead a country.

I doubt many Americans even care about whether the Shah was a hero or coward. People in general are both hero and coward, and a King is just a normal man with a fancy title.

Read the Declaration of Independence for an idea of where classic American "King-bashing" comes from.

Most Americans have put away this negative attitude towards any and all kings, but remember that it's part of where we come from.

Back to topic, now I'm curious. Are Iranians taught that people like Kings somehow automatically deserve more respect than any ordinary citizen without the title, or is this respect an "elder" thing?

I grew up being taught to respect my elders, and to respect people because they ARE people and citizens, but I was never taught to give extra respect to someone with a so-called title like "king" or "lord". We even made jokes about people with that kind of hubris, people who believed they were somehow above the law.

Now I don't claim such people don't exist here (the former leaders of Enron come to mind as examples of people who thought they were better than everyone else), but I choose to respect them as anyone else, not give any special treatment above and beyond what I would have anyway, just because they demand it.

It is widely believed that the Vela Incident in 1979 was a South African nuclear test, which was conducted in secret with Israeli technical expertise... so I can say they would have had to have had them since at least the 70s.
