Hyperbole is worse than an offspring of Hitler and Ron Paul (don't ask how they had kids, it's hypothetical) eating a bald eagle and then excreting the digested eagle onto the constitution.

The best way to combat these people's philosophy...

With legitimate credentials, establish a counter-demonstration. Present a drive wherein all donations to their target cause are presented in their name.

example: they demonstrate against a dead soldier saying bad things about gays. Make evident a position where the public can donate money to the cause of a lesbian/gay charity in THEIR NAME.

Therefore... westboro shows up in your town... people who don't like it can donate funds to a foundation they absolutely deplore... and the reason it happened is because they've made the plight recognizable.

edit: Welcome westboro baptist. You're going to show everyone "who needs funding".
