CBob03 Germans in Tu-tus

Wow. :eek:

In just two turns the Ottomans and Sumerians are down to OCC, we get a MGL from a vigorous defense and we add nine or ten new cities.

:goodjob:

Turn 2 IT:

x Mecca: Cavs
HFH: Settlers
x Bad-tibira: Workers
Civil disorder in x Erech :confused: I adjusted citizen assignments last turn
Ernst Richter: Cavs
Franz Ignaz von Beecke: Workers
JSBach: Cavs
Resistance in x Kutha ends.
Johann Schop: Cannons

Turn 3 (1080 AD):

Declare war on the Celts. Hengest and two Cavs race across the desert and destroy Deva after killing a spear and two Gallic Swords!
Two eCavs take out a Musket and a Pike, and Glanum is ours!
Lose two vCavs taking Rutupiae.
Take Glevum (in what used to be western Ottoman empire) from the Celts, no losses.
Take Lapardum (no losses).

It seems that Greece just entered the IA. They learned Medicine, so we can buy it anytime.

*** Keep an eye on Kurt Weill - they're close to cranky.

IT:

Lose two Cavs to Celt counterattacks - but a third slays his attacker :)
Helmut Lachenmann: Cav->Uni
Felix Draeseke: Rifle->Rifle
Gustav Mahler: Workers
Offenbach: Rifle->Market
Andreas Romberg: Cannon->Cannon

Turn 4 (1090 AD):

Kill a stray GS near x Glanum
Barbarossa kills 3 muskets and a cav to take Verulamium.
At Agedincum, lose one Cav, kill 2 muskets and 1 cav and the city is ours!
Lose another cav trying to pick off an archer, of all things :(
Dieterich Buxtehude founded near x Marad. Making Cannon.
One army puts paid to the Sumerians by capturing Apisala!
Another army captures Monguntiacum and ends the Celtic presence west of the coastal Gem mountains in what used to be their territory :D
MM to avoid wasted beakers. Sci to 50%.

IT:

Lose three Cavs and a stack of workers to Celts.
EEK! One of their GSs was in range of Susa! Somehow, I missed that, and it was undefended :blush:
Electricity->RP
Georg Hajdu: Settlers
Heinz Chur: Settlers
x Ankara: Cannon->Cannon
Johnannes Nucius: Cannon->Cannon
:woohoo: Akwesasne culture flips to us.
Indians start Newtons.

Turn 5 (1100 AD):

First things first, retake Susa. One cav does the trick.
J. H. Buttstett founded near x Bad-tibira. Making Cannon.

IT:

Lose a pair of Cavs to Celtic counterattacks.
Lose the Archer army and a Longbow as the Celts retake Lindum :mad:
Iroquois want MPP+RoP ... and for us to pay 1gpt for the privilege. No way.
Herbert Brun: Cav->Uni
x Kisurra: Worker->Cannon
Franz Ignaz von Beecke: Workers
Gustav Mahler: Workers
GFH: Cav->Rifle

Turn 6 (1110 AD):

We retake Lindum using the forces that attacked it last turn. I really should have defended that city better :blush:
We kill a few Celtic units using our Cav army and Hengest.
Hans von Bülow founded. Making Cannon.
Take Karabuk with a pair of Cavs, and the Ottomans are gone!
Upgrade a couple of Pikes to Rifles.

IT:

Lose an MDI to an enemy Cav

Civil disorder in Monguntiacum
Sethus Calvisius: Lib->Worker
Christian Cannabich: Lib->Worker

Lose a Longbow to a stray GS
x Mecca: Cavs
Franz Ignaz von Beecke: Workers
Gustav Mahler: Workers
PDQ Bach: Cavs
x Kutallu: Worker->Cannon
J Krebs: Workers
x Kirklareli: Lib->Cannon
Carl Tieke: Courthouse->Lib

Turn 8 (1130 AD):

Lose a few Longbows in the battles for Burdigala and Nemausus, but we take both towns.
Nicolaus Bruhns founded. Making Cannon.

IT:

To be continued...

Lose the Archer army and a Longbow as the Celts retake Lindum :mad:
Don't be too upset.

The Archer Army was Old Tech, but at least they died on their feet; they weren't disbanded to help make a building.
:salute:

Here's the rest of my turnlog:

Turn 8 (1130 AD):

Lose a few Longbows in the battles for Burdigala and Nemausus, but we take both towns.

Upgrade a couple more Pikes to Rifles as I shuffle defenders to and fro

IT:

Lose a Cav to a Celtic cav.
x Ur: Worker->Cannon
Eberlin: Uni->Settler
Helmut Lachenmann: Uni->Cav
Ernst Richter: Cavs
Ouch, x Burdigala culture-flipped. We had several units stationed there :(

Russians start Smith's

Turn 10 (1150 AD):

Move attack stacks into position for the next player to take Tolosa and Richborough.
Divert a Cav from going to Richborough in order to retake x Burdigala. The city is ours again.
Gregor Aichinger founded near x Lindum. Making Cannon.
Bartholomäus Aich founded a little south of Lindum. Making Cannon.
We bombard the defenders at Lugdunum and attack with Cavs. We take the city with no losses! :D

Handoff notes:

The Celtic war is in good shape. We're poised to take two more cities next turn, and if we send armies without cannon support, we could probably make that three. I'll be surprised if the Celts last another 10 turns if the next player is as aggressive as I was. The only fly in the ointment is Curovernum and Segusio. They're on the other side of a bay, with Greek territory covering the land routes.

We could get around that in several ways:
a) Buy the Greeks into an alliance
b) Rush a couple of Galleons using the former Celtic cities and send a couple of armies to the holdouts.
c) Sign a RoP with Greece and use our workers to rail a path through their territory.

Speaking of Greece, they have a lot of cash. We should consider selling them Steam Power. We can also sell Steam Power to the Incans and Indians - better for us to get their gold than for the Greeks to get it :)
Finally, I'd like to start a war over on the eastern part of the continent. A dogpile vs. the Iroquois or the Japanese would reduce the number of civs in the game with little effort on our part, I think.

Edit: Lots of civs are working on Smith's, so I should note that RW will finish it in two turns.

Spoiler :

the save.

Let's sign an ROP with Greece and make the last Sumerian cities into lighthouses of German culture.

Let's sell Steam Power while we can.

Dogpile in the East? Love it.

Roster:

TheOverseer714 - UP!
ansar - lurking duty
CommandoBob - on deck
Tribute- lurking duty
SipTheSoup - lurking duty
Elephantium - just played
mr_2_you - lurking duty

If I get done with my turns and we still have only three players I'll post in the SG thread. I want to give the others a chance to play first.

Once the Celts are history, the turns should play faster.

Unless we take on the Indians, which I'd like to do.

Ideally, I'd like to take all the land west of the "chokepoint" represented by Japan's core territory.

This is my official "got it" post, I may not begin play until tomorrow night, as I'm up in another SG. Any strategy suggestions and further plans on who to attack next would be appreciated. I will shoot for 10 turns, but I make no guarantees, as I'm kinda spread thin with 4 SG's going (Am I nuts?)

Nah, you're not nuts. I'm also in four SGs - plus the Demogame.

My suggestions are as follows:

* Take the rest of the Celtic towns that are within easy reach.
* Sign a ROP with Greece and run 3-4 armies up to the last two Celtic towns to take them.
* Sell Steam Power to Greece, Inca, and India, picking up Medicine and tons of gold in the process.
* Declare war on America. Sign the Dutch, Mongols, Japanese, Iroquois, and Aztecs. I'm not sure about the Iro or the Aztecs, but last time I looked, the Dutch and Mongols lack Iron, and the Japanese lack Salt. That should make the alliances cheap.
* Start building Settlers in more middle-grade cities - we have a lotmore land to fill!

On Turn 7 or 8 (1220 or 1230 AD) our deal with Russia for Furs will expire. Let it.

On the following turn, declare war on Russia and capture their Furs, which are between Johannes Brahms and Christian Cannabich. They are just inside the Russian border. Capturing Bryansk will do the trick.

This will then give us 7 of 8 luxuries. We'll still need Ivory to have all eight.

Before you sell Steam Power to Greece, offer Gems for Ivory. We may have to pay some gpt for the Ivory, but that's okay. We'll get it back when we sell them Steam Power.

Unless we take on the Indians, which I'd like to do.

Ideally, I'd like to take all the land west of the "chokepoint" represented by Japan's core territory.
India is doing very well in this game. They have 33 cities and have been somewhat aggressive.

But after we take out the Celts, I think the only other reason for war will be to get all 8 luxuries. Which means fighting either Greece or America to get a source of Ivory.

Once the Celts are gone we will control about a third of the map. I think we'll have space for all 200 cities in this area. It will be crowded, but I think we can do.

We'll still need a large army. We may even want to blockade our borders to keep the AI out. And at this point I was thinking that Germany could relax and focus on building culture.

But I'm open to other ideas.

Eh, I'd say we need more of a moderate army once we stop expanding - enough to stop any AI incursions. With our rail network, we needn't fear invasion.

To get Ivory, I'd favor attacking Greece; it's more easily defended in case India gets any big ideas when we're halfway to our culture victory.

I have just finished turn 5, and I like going after Greece right after our deals with them expire. We could do the next best thing to RoP rape by building a railnet in Greece during the RoP, then clear out and attack them when it's not a rape, just honorable preparation. I'd also like to sign an RoP with the Inca to allow as fast a takedown as possible, their territory has a long border with Greece and access to a Greek cultural island on the far side of Incan territory. Sound like a plan? After all, America's Ivory is very far away.

Here is my through turn 5 turn-log and the save, I will resume tomorrow night if you guys can wait me out, I'm finding the turns more like 2 hours apiece, so it's slow going, I might finish 10 by Friday night.

Greek War
I've downloaded the save and looked at it through MapStat and CivAssist II. I've not opened the game.

We still have a 17 turn deal with the Greeks. An ROP would 3 more turns to that.

Ollantaytambo, the Greek city with the Ivory, is not near our border. In fact, it is on the other side of a mountain range. Lots of Worker Turns. We would need to capture two other cities on the way to the Ivory also, to protect the trade route.

Another option, which I see now when I reread Overseer's notes, would be to ROP with Inca and build up their railnet to Ollantaytambo, which is only one tile from the Incan border. Capture Ollantaytambo, load it up with forces to prevent a flip or else just raze it and rebuild. And we have Ivory.

(When I first read Overseer's plan I thought he wanted to attack Inca. I don't know how I read that into what he wrote. :crazyeye: )

The Greek cities of Herakleia and Ica are also one tile away from the Incan border. We would need to capture these towns also to preserve our trade route. Attacking via Inca lands will be much easier than bulldozing through Greece.

So...
I'm in favor of an ROP with Inca to help our attack on Greece. We'll just need to get our units into place a few turns before our trade deal with Greece expires. If we wait until the turn before I'm afraid some Incan worker would wind up blocking our path.

Turns
Take as long as you need, Overseer. One of the reasons for a Huge map was to give everyone some time as a Pointy Stick Commander. Once our borders are set, the turns should move much faster. No warfare, less unit movements, maybe some MM and rushing.

I am done with all 10 turns, it was a marathon with a fine reward at the end, which you'll see in the turn-log and screenshots. Here is the entire turn-log:

Looks good. Celts are gone; we have our own Furs and are working on getting our own Ivory to complete the Luxury Collection,; and people our paying us for our smarts.

:dance: :woohoo:

I'll focus on railing to the Ivory in GreeceLand and beat up on Russia a little bit.

I'll check each turn for pop rushing opportunities (CAII doesn't really like my PC, so I'll check the hard way).

Government Change
We still plan to change governments a 2nd time, correct? Going to Republic from Feudalism. But this would be after we get a lot of culture buildings built. Right now we are gathering +372 cpt; I think we should be looking to change once we get over +500 cpt. At least +500 cpt; perhaps it should be higher; around +700 or so.

Or maybe 200 cities is an easier target to use.

Feudalism 0.9.1
4150 gold, 210 gpt
Industrialization 1 turns
Golden Age, 11 more turns.

Per Civ Assist II, at our current pace, we will have a Cultural Victory in 2076 AD.
We plan on something a bit sooner.

We sell a bunch of barracks.

Whew!

I started this at 9:30 am and planned to spend about 30 minutes on the preflight. I had 10 minutes to go and then I started cycling through the cities. I get back to Richard Wagner and check the time; it is 11:30!
:eek:
I don't know of any game help that tells you how many of each improvement have been built ('Your Empire has 1 palace, three libraries, 16 barracks,...'). The only way to know is to visit each city on a royal tour. I thought we had too much artillery in the making and not enough libraries, so I changed that and used hard hats (Civil Engineers) to help. Most cities are still growing, only slower. In Feudalism this is not all bad, since smaller cities give more unit support.

Saved game as CBob03_AD_1250_End.SAV.

Long Term Goals
Be the most refined Germans on the planet.

Mid Term Goals
A library in each city.

Short Term Goals
Spam some libraries.
Complete the Ivory Railroad through Inca land.

lurker's comment:

CAII does it, after a fashion; if you look on the 'economy' setting, there is a list of all the cities. Each city improvement already built - and those still to be built - are represented by check boxes, ticked or not ticked.
