Civ3 1.29 beta 2

Quite understandable Brad. But once we get C&C: Generals, we're all over you again :)

You can run, but you can't hide! ;)

Honestly, thanks for everything. :goodjob:

Hi, it might have been treated somewhere else but i didn't find the answer.
I've noticed that 1280x854 is not a resolution available.
It's the default (max)powerbook alu 15" resolution.
Is there a way to easily add support for it in 1.29beta2?
Thanks

There will be an option for custom screen resolutions in the final release of 1.29f.

Welcome to CFC, Lestat! :)

Hey, who invited the vampire? We're doomed now. ;)

So do we expect 1.29f to even come out or what? I am wondering if my 5 minute turn gaps are because of 1.21g. -JB

Have you tried 1.29b2? It doesn't do custom screen resolutions, but I found it far more stable than 1.21g

I just installed 1.21g and I have not yet tried it out, is that a bad thing?
And I can't get the editor to work? I am using OS 10.2.8. Any suggestions?

No. Why would it be bad? Because you've just now did it?

The CivEdit application must be in the Civ3 folder, not within its folder in the Civ3 folder.

Civ3 -> CivEdit

I noticed that with 1.21g and 1.29b2, I cannot move the screen down during gameplay. I can only move the screen down after moving left or right? Strange.
However I did install both patches one after the other. I reinstalled the original and now it's fine. huh...

Edit: After trying installation again, this is no longer a problem

You mean scroll up or down? I have no problem :hmm: I can use the up/down arrow keys or move my mouse to the top/bottom edge of the screen and it scrolls. Of course it stops when it reaches the poles ;)

My thoughts on 1.21g versus 1.29b2 ...

- 1.21g is the only option you have if you want to run the edior, but once you have created a map or scenario you can play it in 1.29b2.
- 1.29b2 is the only option if you want to join in games played by Windows players eg gotm or sg or sgotm, or to use mods created by Windows players.
- 1.29b2 is more stable than 1.21g IMHO
- 1.29b2 has a few improvements like stack move and a different AI tech rate

Re. your editor problem, there are some people who never seem to be able to use the editor. At one point I thought it might be those with non-English versions of Mac OS X, but I never really found out if this was the case. It's a mystery

Well I don't think it's my imagination ! ;)

Yes. Click on a unit in a stack to select it, press J, click where you want it to go and it moves there along with all the other similar units in the stack. I have heard it said that Shift-J (or was it Command-J?) will move ALL the units - same or different types - but that one's never worked for me. Not that I can see much point in it as I seldom use combined forces, except artillery if the game's gone that far, and usually my units have different speeds so a mass move order could be dangerous..

i'll try that! i allways wondered why the win-people could have this while i was moving 1 unit at a time . . . . . .

Downloaded and installed 1.29b2. Had a bit of trouble as it decided that it didn't want to locate my saved games, but after a clean install from CD that seems to have been fixed. How do I go about changing screen resolution? The popup menu doesn't show up as I told it a long time ago not too, but 1.29b2 has decided it really wants to operate in 640 x 480 or a similar large resolution. I prefer to see more of the map.

Is the 'the people want to improve your palace' thingy disabled in 1.29 b ? I'm currently playing a game where the screen hasn't popped up even once and I'm pretty far in the game (and yes, they're happy, doing fine etc.) It's my one zillionest game and it never happened before, so...
BTW, what exactly triggers palace improvement ? Searched the site but didn't find an answer. (Civ 3, 1.29b2).

Try clicking on the palace view button - 'P' on the right hand mini-frame. I haven't seen this problem for a long time now, but I do recall that it seems to be able to forget to invite you to choose palace upgrades, and this might trigger it into doing so. You may then get to choose several in one go.

I've noticed it often seems to happen when your territory increases, usually as a result of cultural expansion. Maybe it signals an increase in your scoring rate past certain thresholds.

You can probably fix that by trashing the prefs where the path to your saves is remembered. There are two files in OS X in ~/Library/Preferences - "CivIII Preferences" and "com.westlake.Civ3.plist". I think the latter is the one that remembers the file paths.

Thanks, I'll try that. I had accessed the screen via the F key but that didn't help.
Yeah, it's pretty strange, especially as things are going pretty fine culture wise... Quite a few cities have already defected to me (the last one was a 12er). Mmmmhhh... so, you think forgetting the palace can happen randomly ? Well, if it's only that :)
Will let you know what works (if any).

I've also noticed that pretty consistantly I'll get a palace upgrade the first time I sucessfully defend one of my cities against an attack (barbarian or another civ).

Periodically I encountered the "forgetting to notify" bug, though much more rarely on the current version of civ3 than on earlier versions. And usually it seems that it will forget once but then remember another time -- at which point I get to add two improvements at once.
