[NFP] Civilization VI: Possible New Civilizations Thread

Salish, and sometimes even Haida, are also known to use the salmon symbol. It's probably a secondary symbol, but it has a fair degree of ubiquity.
I'm not saying that the Haida don't have other symbols; I'm saying that the Cree's symbol is specifically Haida. (The next logical symbol after the Raven would be the Killer Whale, which is the symbol of the other moiety.)

Tlingit might still have a chance.
I hope so.

Think of all the nations - many of great significance and power - in the world that used an eagle with wings spread out, as their symbol (some having two heads, but the same concept). Abdel Gamal Nasser even greatly displeased Islamic clerics and purists in his own country by putting such a creature on Egypt's flag. The Romans were the first to use such a symbol in that way as a national and military emblem (strangely, there's no evidence of the Mexica using the eagle marking their new home in that way - the Mexican Revolutionaries only seemed to as a retrospective and nostalgic symbol).

When I visited Whistler, BC we went to the Squamish Lilwat center and both of them are appealing options for a PNW civ

I'm also not saying the Cree don't use the raven as a symbol; they might. I'm saying that the design of the Cree symbol is very specifically either Haida or Tlingit. Trust me, I've spent a lot of time studying PNW art, and the Cree symbol is a Northern PNW (i.e., Haida, Tlingit, Tsimshian) Raven, which with other details in the game files can be narrowed down to Haida specifically. ;) (Also, I stand corrected: the Cree symbol is a Haida eagle. Point is, though, it's Haida.)

This is a Cree eagle mask, which probably inspired the symbol.

Huh. I didn't know the PNW art style was imitated so far inland. (I knew a simpler but similar style was used by the inland Athabaskans, whom the Tlingit called gunana, which means something like "hicks" or "philistines.") Hmm, did some Googling and the mask was made by a Cree artist, but it seems to be modern and a deliberate imitation of Tsimshian and Kwakwaka'wakw style. Nice research, Firaxis. :p

If we were getting another Native American civ in this pass and it was new to the series (so not Sioux, Iroquois or Shoshone), who would you most want to see? And who do you think would be most likely, if not the same?

Navajo definitely.

Most likely though I think is probably Sioux or Iroquois.

"Athabaskan" was apparently originally a disparaging term used by Cree for Dene-speaking peoples, just like "Eskimo," was a disparaging term for Inuit used by Gwi'tchin (a Dene ethnicity from Northern Alaska/Yukon/NWT) and "Anasazi," was a disparaging term used by Navajo for Pueblan Peoples.

As are many exonyms, even some that became endonyms, like Gael, which comes from a Welsh word meaning "pirate."

I'll quote myself to answer this, I would love to see PNW specifically get representation, and my personal favorite of the bunch would be the Salish, but if we got one from that area I think that the Tlinglit probably are more likely overall. Beyond them, I would love to see the Navajo or the Cherokee as well.

Chief Seattle for Civ

IMO Seattle is the only reason to consider the Salish over more compelling tribes like the Nuu-Chah-Nulth (who, along with their very close cousins the Makah, were the only whalers in the region) or the Haida/Tlingit (who had the most sophisticated culture in the region--the Tlingit Chilkat weave is the most complex weaving pattern in the world, for instance, and Haida canoes were in high demand all along the coast) or the Tsimshian (who made complicated transformation masks, mechanical masks that hid a second mask underneath). A fun thing about a Tlingit chief is that, contrary to the stereotypes, many of them wore beards.

I’d prefer the Haida or Tlingit, but the Salish would be betted than a First Nation which isn’t in the PNW or no first nation at all

Given that they have shown int he past (with Germany, Indonesia, India etc) that the names are kind of a catch all for the component civs (ie Indonesia really is the Majapahit Empire), it will be interesting is they move Ethiopia away from the 20th century depiction it has had in previous games and instead have more of a Aksumite Empire feel

What time do we expect this first look? Were past first looks usually Thursday morning EST? Or sometime in the late afternoon EST?

In the past they have almost invariably been at 10am EDT.

I hope so but there's a big possibility the leader might be either Menelik II or Halie Selassie again.
Interestingly all the leaders from Sub-Sahara Africa have come from different time periods:
Classical-Amanitore
Medieval-Mansa Musa
Renaissance- Mvemba
Industrial-Shaka
So it might mean Ethiopia might have a leader from the Modern Era. If we do at least give them an Askumite Shotelai UU.
Then again one could say Nubia is on the fence for representing Sub-Sahara Africa, so we can clearly have another leader from that time period *cough* Ezana *cough*. :mischief:

I know they did Selassie in Civ 5 but I’d like to see him again, if not Menelik II, who somehow hasn’t appeared before.
Biblical Sheeba?
I like to see how she meets King Solomon of Israel and tricked the Ark of Covenant out of him. And she brought Judaism to Ethiopia.
And how Judaism became Ethiopian state religion for many centuries until Early Christianity fused with them to form their own Church.

it is said that the actual Ark itself is kept somewhere in Ethiopia and guarded with the Church's own armed forces. It is said that priests there wields AK rifles!!!
