Define: Elitist

LOL...when you are hijacking a word to use it as a slur it doesn't matter what it means, all that matters is specifying who you hate and want to call names.

Are you the thought & language police assigned here on behalf of the liberal establishment elites?

That is what you're here doing - policing people's thoughts and the word they use - is it not?

Nope. Just pointing out what you are doing. You in no way "defined" elitist, you just identified people you hate who you think merit using it as a slur. The key element in that, of course, is the hatred backing a slur, not the particular word used. That's how slurs are made. Some group of hate filled idiots decides that "watermelon" is a slur that can be used to denigrate environmentalists and starts using it as one, congratulating each other on their cleverness. Some other group of hate filled idiots decides that "liberal" is a slur and starts using it as such. The hate filled idiots slurping Steve Bannon have followed his lead and use "elite" as a slur.

Yes, point out "the bigots" to everyone and "the haters." You know who they are because they defied the thought & word police and used the term "elite" in a manner that you disprove of.

All the groups I mentioned behave in the exact same way. They believe that the ideology of the liberal establishment is supreme and in a very elitist manner they dictate to everyone what to think and what to say.

Funny thing is that I don't think of you as part of a group, be it "bigots" or "haters." In fact, if I did have a target group and I really wanted to create a slur to use on them I'd probably call them "civmen."

I definitely call myself an elitist from time to time to mock myself and my arrogance. I was visiting a classmate yesterday and told her that her 3 room flat looked bad and if she lives with her husband, dog and kid she should get a house. As if you could buy a house on Walmart for 50 dollars.

It means "I am stupid, but you are not allowed to call me out on that."

Well, if you truly know more than others - and not just to be a know-it-all busibody - why should you apologise for it to anyone?
You shouldn't, but people tend to resent those who know more than them, and will look for flaws (real or imagined) to find something they can look down on, so as to equalize how they feel the power balance.

I love how every single thread just turns into political feces flinging

When I read this thread title, before delving into it, I immediately had a positive connotation. Like how I, and some friends, are real elitists when it comes to food.. Or music, film, whatever. I got called music nazi at least once, I hope it was in reference to that Seinfeld episode.. I kind of take pride in being an elitist about many things. I get offended when someone tells me Taco Bell is great, or that Drake's new single was really good, or that the new Transformers movie was hot, because it had fantastic cgi. And it's not like I despise fast food, or pop music, or action movies. I love 'em, I just don't settle for the lowest common denominator.

Seems like this board is elitist in a sense, too. Look at the 'cerebral horror movie' thread for example. Or the discussion about Bob Dylan and the nobel prize. It's a good thing, is it not?

I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was

I Definitely share the Pokémon mentality, I actually still play competitive Pokémon from time to time, it's a lot of fun. Never stopped loving it.

Q: does elitist necessarily mean a person of the/an elite? Or is there a subtle nuance?

I guess I sort of understand it's meaning. I think it's a immensely silly criticism for reasons already mentioned here but I can sort of understand where it's coming from. I suspect most people can.

It's a phenomenon that is currently ongoing in Norway too. With politicians on the populist right (whom are in government) frequently cementing their positions as anti elitist. Which IMO is a strange position to be in as both a wealthy and influential politician.

The ruling elites are beyond the category of liberal and conservatives, they are even beyond 1%--they are the 1% of the 1%. Donald Trump's wealth is within the top 1% of top 1%, that is an elite.

Donald Trump isn't part of the liberal establishment. He isn't an ideologue. He is wealthy that is it.
