by virtue of his signifiers of midwestern, gun-toting, small-town, family-oriented appeal, which is nice but honestly has no innate connection to his politics

Well it probably breaks down into this:

Midwestern = pro farmer, agricultural subsidies, ethanol is preferred green energy source

Gun-toting = pro second Amendment, will only go so far as background checks, tough on crime/pro police

Small-town = pro ma & pa business, taxes for big business & high income earners but less tax for middle; lower; and small business, pro first responder & teacher

Family-oriented appeal = anti-trans, tough on crime/pro police

The guy didn't even get off any shots according to what I've read. I await further info with great interest.

Calling the funniest scenario now: the gunman is a Swiftie, leading to Taylor having to publicly disavow political violence for her movement

Do you think they care about that? They're just angry enough about not being able to make jokes to want to own the libs.
I know. The thing is, he needs to be answered, when he talks about censorship, with something along the lines of ‘Oh, Tipper, come on…’

Edit: the Donald has openly declared today that he also ‘hates’ Taylor Swift.
Trump threatens long prison sentences for those who ‘cheat’ in the election if he wins
Politics Sep 8, 2024 2:42 PM EDT

MOSINEE, Wis. (AP) — With just days to go before his first and likely only debate against Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Donald Trump posted a warning on his social media site threatening to jail those “involved in unscrupulous behavior” this election, which he said would be under intense scrutiny.

“WHEN I WIN, those people that CHEATED will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the Law, which will include long term prison sentences so that this Depravity of Justice does not happen again,” Trump wrote late Saturday, sowing doubt once more about the integrity of the election, even though cheating is incredibly rare.

“Please beware,” he went on, “that this legal exposure extends to Lawyers, Political Operatives, Donors, Illegal Voters, & Corrupt Election Officials. Those involved in unscrupulous behavior will be sought out, caught, and prosecuted at levels, unfortunately, never seen before in our Country.”

Trump’s message represents his latest threat to use the office of the presidency to exact retribution if he wins a second term. There is no evidence of the kind of fraud he continues to insist marred the 2020 election; in fact, dozens of courts, Republican state officials and his own administration have said he lost fairly.

Just days ago, Trump himself acknowledged in a podcast interview that he had indeed “lost by a whisker.”
Aaargh! Just for his use of random capitalisation of letters he deserves a further criminal prosecution, let alone for his actual threat of force against his enemies.

So the would-be assassin's twitter has been suspended, but someone I follow on there was posting screenshots and apparently the guy was a Trump 2016 - Bernie 2020 - Vivek/Haley 2024 guy, also @Sommerswerd apparently a big Tulsi fan, before she turned to open Trump support

Well, yes, people who decide on their own to murder another person are usually nutters.

Tulsi reportedly helped Trump prepare for the debate by serving as a pretend Kamala Harris... which in and of itself says so many things about the perspective of Trump and his campaign.

It's not all bad, Dick Cheney, the Penguin and rather super-vile figure from the W Iraq war, endorsed Kamala and MSNBC celebrates (Jon Stewart mock-vomited). But the assassination front is much worse, since it underlines the sentiment that if you hate someone enough they shouldn't even be allowed to live, let alone run for potus - with a compromise being they can be left to live, but only if they don't run.

The potential assailant, Ryan Routh, is apparently a MAGA Trump supporter with a history of mental illness and has a previous arrest connected to firearms. He was apparently disavowed by a Ukrainian militia (perhaps he was found too extremist?). He's described as a conspiracist that may have grown very disillusioned with the state of things in the US, listening to Trump's repeated lies.

He fits the profile for those kind of MAGA people that Trump speaks directly to; this time his reaction was to approach Trump personally with a firearm. If Trump had any capacity for reflection and thought, this might make him reconsider his words when he talks in public in the future, but knowing Trump, there's zero chance of that happening.

Ukraine militia member doesn't exactly scream pro-Trump ^^
I am also not keen on identifying people who shoot at Trump as his supporters, due to the obvious inconsistency. It was tried with the previous one too, who did get a shot to his head (hit the ears, could have killed him with minimally different trajectory).

Disillusioned ex supporter.

You've been a bit quiet about Trump's age.

Mental illness and previous arrest connected to firearms....
