I guess I don't understand how a lack of transparency helps authenticity. You're trusting that behind closed doors, people are being the people they truly are, instead of some kind of faux for-the-cameras type, and at the same time hoping that they therefore make the best decisions (in the interests of their voters, and not themselves).

I can kinda understand the former (but disagree that "people being the people they truly are" is a desirable goal, because some of these people are, well, awful, and transparency historically goes some way to mollifying behaviour in that regard), but the latter seems ludicrously idealistic. "starry eyed and hopeful", to borrow your phrase.

On RCP the last 4 polls to show Trump ahead, the only ones to do so (always by 2%) are all Rasmussen polls. However, whenever Rasmussen (or any pollster) releases a new poll, RCP drops the prior poll from that pollster out of their averages, so that the pollster cannot swing the average by spamming polls. Harris is currently leading by 2% on RCP. 538 currently has Harris up 2.6%.

Famous (or infamous, depending on your perspective) poll aggregator and political forecaster, Nate Silver left 538, which he founded and now has his own site "Silver Bulletin". Silver currently has Harris up 3.2%

Desantis as a governor has no obligation to take calls from her, a political candidate. What does she do for him?
She has federal emergency funds. It seems there is a lot she could do for Florida right now.

So now ‘Trump insults Detroit in visit to Detroit’ is no longer an Onion headline…

Trump insults Detroit during speech … in Detroit

Donald Trump attacked the city of Detroit in a speech he was giving while stumping for votes in Detroit.
The former US president and Republican nominee was speaking on Thursday at the Detroit Economic Club in the city, which is the biggest city in Michigan – one of the most crucial swing states in the 2024 US election.
But Trump, whose speeches are frequently rambling and lengthy discourses rather than set piece deliveries, could not stop himself from lambasting the city in which he was speaking by pointing to Detroit’s recent history of economic decline from its heyday as the home of American car production.
As he was speaking about China being a developing nation, Trump said: “Well, we’re a developing nation too, just take a look at Detroit. Detroit’s a developing area more than most places in China.”
He later returned to the theme, warning of an economic disaster if his Democratic opponent, Kamala Harris, wins in November’s election.
“Our whole country will end up being like Detroit if she’s your president. You’re going to have a mess on your hands,” Trump said.
Michigan polling shows Harris and Trump still caught up in a very tight race.
Democrats in the state reacted angrily to the insults and saw a chance to score political points.

This is ridiculous. She is not the US president yet no matter how much she and others wants to act like it. No federal entity is under the vice president's control. And please don't tell me she has any sway over the current president.

This is really just par for the course and not unusual at all. Detroit is a majority black city. He may need black voters but he really is not trying hard to get them. On the contrary he is courting white voters with dog whistle comments like these. His whole political pitch is white grievance politics and comments like these are quite popular among his base and others.
I suppose the election will answer one question, are there enough dissatisfied whites in America who are willing to put DJT back in office? TBD.

She can act as a go between for the President.

If you're not a moron I would take the call. He's playing politics with a disaster.

Cards Against Humanity campaigns to encourage voting, expose personal data abuse

The troublemakers behind the party game Cards Against Humanity have launched a campaign demonstrating how easy it is to buy sensitive personal data about American voters, while simultaneously encouraging those Americans to plan how to cast a vote in the upcoming presidential election.

The "Cards Against Humanity Pays You to Give a Poo" campaign uses US citizens' personal data obtained from a broker to identify whether individuals voted in the 2020 US presidential election and how they lean politically. Those who didn't vote are asked to put info into the website, promise to vote in the upcoming election, make a voting plan, "and publicly post 'Donald Trump is a human toilet'" in exchange for up to $100.

The amount paid out will vary, depending on a voter's home state and political leanings. Democrat-leaning voters in the so-called swing states that will likely decide the presidential election under the US Electoral College system are eligible for the $100. People in other states – and, presumably, Republicans – get less.

Of course, the whole thing needs money to work, so CAH, through its recently registered CAH Super political action committee (PAC), is also offering a $7.99 expansion pack for its signature game, themed around the 2024 election, with all proceeds going to pay lazy voters to leave the house on November 5. The party game provider also put up $100,000 of its own to fund the effort.

"Cards Against Humanity is exploiting a legal loophole," the org explains. "This whole thing should probably be illegal – so quick, give us your money before they change the law!"

Paying someone to vote is illegal in the US under multiple laws.

But a PAC paying someone to do voting-adjacent things is not illegal. Indeed, America PAC – Elon Musk's political vehicle, this week launched a campaign that offers $47 to people who refer voters to sign a petition.

The New York Times article about that campaign quotes campaign finance lawyer Brendan Fischer as saying it is legal. On X, Fischer wrote: "America PAC is ultimately spending money for voter data, which PACs and campaigns do all the time … but typically political groups pay just a few pennies per name, not $47 each."

Put your phone number into the site, along with a few personal details, and it spits back party registration, whether or not you voted, and your political lean, among other data points.

To quote CAH, "It's pretty £$%&ed up."

"We formed a Super PAC and bought the personal voting records of every American citizen from a data broker we found on the internet," the game publisher wrote. "We got your partisan lean from the same data broker who sold us your voting history. You wouldn't believe how easy it was for us to get this stuff."

Then you won't believe the current attack line that Harris "spent all the FEMA money on illegal immigrants", which is as obviously ridiculous as it is untrue.

Meanwhile,

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, former President Donald Trump has blasted the Biden administration for its handling of the disaster — going so far as to accuse Democratic leaders of ignoring the needs of Republican storm victims.

But a review of Trump’s record by POLITICO’s E&E News and interviews with two former Trump White House officials show that the former president was flagrantly partisan at times in response to disasters and on at least three occasions hesitated to give disaster aid to areas he considered politically hostile or ordered special treatment for pro-Trump states.

Mark Harvey, who was Trump’s senior director for resilience policy on the National Security Council staff, told E&E News on Wednesday that Trump initially refused to approve disaster aid for California after deadly wildfires in 2018 because of the state’s Democratic leanings.

But Harvey said Trump changed his mind after Harvey pulled voting results to show him that heavily damaged Orange County, California, had more Trump supporters than the entire state of Iowa.

“We went as far as looking up how many votes he got in those impacted areas … to show him these are people who voted for you,
” said Harvey, who recently endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris alongside more than 100 other Republican former national security officials.

The white savior complex is somewhat frayed by his picking up of gains in nonhwhite constituencies over time.

DJT's appeal more about lacking a.. certain class.

Until election results actually come in his supposed gains with people of color are entirely that, supposed. There's been no result that has bore that out tangibly.

He's outperformed his party's historical take on those metrics already.

NPR couldn't stop wildering over the non hwhites not voting thier race last time the results came in.

I would guess he gets another 3, 4% gain in this go around as well.

More bizarre takes will be incoming from both sides.
